William West married Anna Schultz in Hull 1916
« on: Monday 22 May 17 17:07 BST (UK) »
If anyone is researching William West, I'd be happy to hear from you, on behalf of a friend.

We have him marrying Anna Schultz in Hull in 1916 and their two children born in Hull: Charles and Doreen. I have found him in Hull on the 1939 Register and he gives his dob as 29.9 1891 but, with such a common surname, I'm having problems identifying him prior to his wedding. I don't know for sure that he was born in Hull either.

By the way, all of the above named are deceased.

Thanks,
Jill

With such a common name, buying the Marriage Certificate is simply a must! ;D

That will have his occupation, father's name & occupation.
From thos clues, you should be able to find him in earlier censuses.

I don't really think there is any option?

You could try to find the Parish Register entry - but that may not be online, especially if non-conformist or even a Register Office wedding?
And you would need to find out in which church?!

According to Yorkshirebmd the marriage took place at Holy Trinity, Hull.  Assuming that you are local you should be able to see the parish register on fiche at the Treasure House in Beverley.

Help! I've now got the marriage certificate but I'm still going round in circles trying to find William West.

Full details on the certificate:-

8 Oct 1916 at Holy Trinty, Hull

William West  age 25 - bachelor - lurryman - 74 Waverley St (Hull) - father: William West (deceased), horse dealer.

Anna Schultz age 23 - spinster - no occupation - same address - father: Charles Schultz, skin cleaner.

Witnesses: W. Bayes, Jn Schultz.

I have checked the address on the 1911 census but there is a completely different family living there.

We have no idea where William may have been born so cannot narrow it down to East Yorkshire.

I have tried searching for a horse dealer on earlier censuses but the only one I can find is on the 1891 census amongst a long list of people lodging at Bow Chambers Lodging House in Bow, London:-

William West - single - 40 - horse dealer - born London Mile End.

I suppose its possible that William jun's mother had him illegitimately and told him that his father was a horse dealer. There is a birth in Shoreditch Reg District in DecQ 1891 for a William West, no mother's maiden name and I think Shoreditch is quite near to Bow (I'n thinking "Oranges and Lemons"!!) but it does seem a bit of a stretch if I can't find any of them on any censuses - and I can't!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jill

Hi Jill,

Like you, no joy with census details.

I thought with William being born early 1890's, there may be some WW1 records for him, and I did find one interesting entry.

I don't know if you have access to them?

On both FindMyPast and Ancestry, there's a William West, born 1891/2, regimental number 21826, East Yorkshire Regiment, whose occupation is shown as "Horseman"
He was discharged in April 1916, so before he was wed.

His address is shown as 1 Fanny's Terrace, Redbourne Street, Hull, with his aunt, an "Annie Ramsdale"

I've tried to follow her up, but no luck as yet.

A real mystery family  ::)
