RAWSON family 1550s
« on: Monday 22 May 17 20:50 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I have a Jane RAWSON (d. 1595 Over Stowey, Soms) who married John BLAKE (1521 - 1576 Soms) but I cannot locate birth family for Joan.

There is a family in Colnbrook, Bucks, a generation or two later but I cannot link them back to, perhaps, Joan.

Any RAWSON assistance or tips appreciated! Thank you!

It was a good idea to post on Bucks board too   ...with a link to this post

If anyone does post an answer on there remember to add the link .

Good luck with your search .

I don't understand the reference to Joan - who is Joan and what is the relationship to the couple you are researching?

Sorry, Peter!

She is either Jane or Joan RAWSON. I have her as Joan. Apologies for the confusion about her name; it is Johan in her husband's will.

I am a descendant of the Rawsons of Colnbrook.  My wife is a descendant of the Blakes of Plainsville.  Last summer we traveled to Plainsminster (Little Stowey), Somerset to the village where the two individuals with these last names were married to each other. I can't find the link. The only hint that I have is that my ancestor Richard Rawson was a very wealthy wool merchant and the head of the Mercer Company. John Blake (1521-1596) from Plainsminster was also a very wealthy wool merchant in that town. He actually built the church in Plainsminster (Little Stowey) that we visited. They were buried inside the church.  It is all speculation, but I believe that there was a connection through the wool business. It is likely that they would have worked together in London. I would love to find the actual link, but haven't yet. I plan on revisiting this summer and going to the Bridgewater Museum which features the Blake family with their prominence.  Robert Blake "Father of the British Navy" and grandson of Jane and Richard was from there. Robert eventually became th governor of colonial South Carolina in from 1694 and again in 1696 until his death in  1700. Ober Stowey and Little Stowey are the same towns.

The book in the link, Larry.

The link will likely land you on page 59. There is much more in earlier and later pages.
