Mistranscribe not a word??
« on: Monday 22 May 17 20:59 BST (UK) »
According to Richard Osman on Pointless today, "mistranscribe" is not a word! I beg to differ - this word and its derivatives very common in my Notes. I suspect OED not keeping up with current usage!

It is not according to Richard Osman, he does say that Looking for any word which has its own entry in the British and World English section of OxfordDictionaries.com., and mistranscribe is not in the OED "No dictionary entries found for ‘mistranscribe’."

Tell him to buy a Collins Dictionary  :D

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/mistranscribe

or The Free Dictionary

I don't think Rootschatters will be burying it anytime soon  ;D

Chris,

Out of curiosity, did he offer an alternative  ???

Doesn't appear in my original (1981) Macquarie Dictionary, not sure if it's been added since then, but certainly appears in my "Notes" too.  ;)

It probably didn't appear until lately as people had to visit archives & do their own transcriptions so there would be no mistooks  ;D until computers became our search place  :P

No. He did say that retranscribe is a word, though I've never used it. I'm reminded of a Countdown episode years ago (when it was on at a sensible time)  when "regrading" was not allowed, though where I worked there were people who talked of little else (code for "pay rise"). I think the OED might use programs like these to see if there might be words that are missing from their works.
