For future ref once you have established Samuel lineage this I think will be relevant.
Likely where the Wheatley comes from in the Straw line.

Richard STRAW Married Eliza WHEATLEY, 1 October 1753, Ilkeston.

Because of the two records having the same numbers, I’ve sent an error report to GRO asking them to check both records so if you can wait, they said it is updated weekly.

Looking at the 1871 census as well as your Samuel Straw there are the following families

1. Wheatley Straw 28
    Myra Straw 25
    Samuel Straw 5
    Phoebe Straw 4
    Harriett Straw 2
These children all appear to have a mother's maiden name of Bell from  the Groindexes. There is a marriage of Wheatley Straw to Myra Bell in Ilkeston in 1864.

2. William Straw 49
    Marey Straw 46
    James Straw 16
    Thomas Straw 14
    Jemima Straw 11
    Selina Straw 9
    Samuel Straw 5
These children all appear to have a mother's maiden name of Trueman. There is a possible marriage of William Straw to Mary Trueman in Basford Jan - March 1844.

3. John Straw 38
    Mary Straw 34
    Ann Straw 7
    Samuel Straw 3
    William Straw 0
These children all appear to have a mother's maiden name of Riley. (Unable to see a marriage between a John Straw and a Mary Riley).

Of the births showing in Basford in the Groindexes for a Samuel Straw the only mother's maiden name not accounted for above is that of Lees. However there is a marriage showing in Basford Oct - Dec 1858 of a Samuel Straw and an Ann Lees and the 1871 census has this.

Ann Straw 30 Widow
Rebeckah Straw 2 (birth in groindex for Rebecca Straw July - Sept 1868 Basford mmn Lees).

There is also a death for Samuel Straw age 32 Jan- March 1869 in Basford and the infant death showing for Samuel Straw in 1867 may well be his and Ann Lees's son.

I think the above would appear to account for the births showing in the groindexes for Samuel Straw in Basford in the correct time frame. So I would conclude that either the birth was not registered or, as suggested earlier, it has been incorrectly transcribed.

William

....will get a copy of 7b p111

This birth is not your Samuel.  Wheatley STRAW married Myra BELL in 1864 and they had several children including Samuel (7b/111).

I also think they probably didn't register the birth, however you can have a search done giving specific details which you want matched and if there is no registration they will not charge you.

From the GRO site:

Q4. If I don’t have the index reference number what will happen?

If you are unable to trace or do not have the index reference you may still apply online for any event which took place on or after 1st July 1837 to 6 months from the current date (for marriages this period is extended to 18 months) provided you have sufficient information to identify the entry. A 3 year search for the index reference will be carried out. You should supply the exact date of event if you have it. If you don't have the exact date, enter 01/01/YYYY and we will search the specified year and one year either side. If you do not provide an index reference number, your application will take up to 15 working days to process.

1. Log in to the GRO website https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp
2. Choose 'Place an Order'
3. On the form check the button for 'Birth (England & Wales)'
4. At the bottom of the form,  'Is the GRO Index Reference Number known?' - check the 'No' button
5. 'Year in which the event was registered' - put 1866 and they will then check one year either side as well
6. Click on 'submit'
7. On the next page fill out the required fields - Samuel STRAW - and date of birth (just put 01/01/1866 and they will search 1865-1867).  Place of birth - Derbyshire
8. Optional Parents' names - I advise just putting Father's Forename - Thomas, Mother's Forename - Hannah and leave it at that, do not enter surnames.
9. Finish the rest of the details on the form and submit.

They will then search 1865-1867 and only charge you if they can match the child's name and parents' names.

Thank you for the census information my grandfather seems either to have not been registered then or there was an error in recording his birth. Find it strange that Thomas and Hannah had all their other children registered correctly but not my grandfather. Have been trying to get a birth certificate for him for 17 years. luckily more information is available now than then 😊
