Looking for some details for 2 Lury girls
« on: Wednesday 24 May 17 07:27 BST (UK) »
Looking for some information concerning Agnes Lury and her sister Anne Harford Lury.

Both Agnes and Anne were 2 daughters of Harford Lury and Anne Thompson Westlake of Southampton.

I am wondering if there are any newspaper articles for the birth and death of Agnes Lury whose birth was registered Jan - Mar 1855 & death July - Sept 1914?

I have Anne's death but only the date of her birth registration Oct - Dec 1856.

I have a sub for FindMyPast and they do not seem to be there so wonder if there are any other newspaper sites that may have recorded their births/death?

I think you will find these sisters on most census, there also appears to be 4 sisters

Anne Hanford Lury who I believe to be your Anne died 28/02/1948 address given The Retreat York spinster, there is a probate listing for her

Why do you think there would be newspaper information about these sisters or her family ?

In what sense are they not there?  Do you mean you can't find them on census records?

Lury is a bit odd so may well be mistranscribed.  I can see Agnes as Sury and Levry for example.

All 4 sisters look to have died as spinsters.

Hello Millipede & Louisa Maud,

I seem to have confused the issue or perhaps not explained myself well.

I am looking for either baptism records or newspaper articles/notices on these 2 Lury sisters.  Yes you are correct when you say there were 4 sisters and I have the birth and death specifics for the elder of the sisters being Marian and Gertrude.

The family was well off and did include notices for the births and deaths of their children.  I don't have the actual date of death for Agnes Lury but do have it for her sister Anne Harford Lury who did die at The Retreat in Yorkshire. The family were Quakers.

"The Retreat, commonly known as the York Retreat, is a place in England for the treatment of people with mental health needs. Opened in 1796, it is famous for having pioneered the so-called "moral treatment" that became a model for asylums around the world. Founded by William Tuke, it was originally run by and for Quakers but gradually became open to everyone."

Other than Anne Harford the elder 2 sisters died at  11 Furzedown Road, Highfield, Southampton, Hampshire, England.

I know that Agnes' death was registered at Southampton, Hampshire, England and I assume she too died at the same home at which the 3 sisters lived.

When I say 'I have a sub for FindMyPast and they do not seem to be there so wonder if there are any other newspaper sites that may have recorded their births/death?' i simply mean I am unable to locate a notice for Agnes death nor a notice of Anne and Agnes birth in FindMyPast.

I have located them on the census so all OK there.

I am simply looking for some specifics [day/month/year] most likely contained in newspapers for:
* the birth of Agnes & Anne
* the death of Agnes

Stating the obvious but certificates tend to give the specifics you are looking for  :)

Yes very true but the bank balance wont extend to incorporate the costs hence hoping for newspaper articles.

The father went bankrupt 1890.
A Mrs. Westlake who died 1906 left 400 pounds in trust for the daughters of Harford Lury.
Obviously a relative of his late wife.

Added Captain Arthur Jaques Westlake who died 1915 also left money for the four daughters of his sister Ann Thompson Lury

Corrected Mrs Westlake probate was 1906 re The Hampshire Advertiser 13 October 1906.
