Afraid not, because, amazingly, no-one in the family has a credit card.

Another name for a prepaid credit card is a debit card.

Thanks hurworth.  I was afraid it would be considered a debit card.  The Canadian Gov website definitely doesn't take debit cards of any sort.

I got back to the Canadian website but the lady there said I didn't need those details for the Order.  I'm tearing my hair out!

Ask her for them anyway!  I'm sure the bank knows best what it does or doesn't need.
Hope you get something sorted out  :)

I would go back to your original plan then and get the details the bank needs to progress the order :)

Thanks Milliepede

How to get her to reveal the details?  She must think I'm a fraudster!

You might find a MasterCard Cash Passport a handy thing for overseas payments!  It's a card that you just use in the usual way, paying online, in a shop,  using money machine, or Bank teller. You prepay and can load it with many different currencies of your choice!  Especially great for travel. I used it all the time when I was travelling in the UK.  You can also use it for online purchases. You can also change the currencies if you wish!  You will get 2 cards, different numbers, in case of loss of one.

I could have saved myself almost $50 Bank fees on my bank account when I applied to my bank for a money transfer to a UK Museum bank account!  This was to purchase a book, the price of which was about £5 sterling, plus postage and packing to NZ. Ludicrous, especially considering that I was in UK at the Museum only a month later!

Here's a link - read about the Cash Passport.  It can usually be set up for you at your own bank!  Might be worthwhile for you.

When I came back from my UK trip, I still had quite a bit left in there, and I've purchased 2 marriage certs, and one death cert in UK since then!

Good luck with your purchase, whichever way you choose.

Thanks jaybelnz

Everyone is so helpful on rootschat.

I will post back when I have looked into all the options.

I need some death certificates from the US - wonder if they will be hard to obtain?!

If  you use a prepaid credit card, the person accepting it doesn't know what kind of card it is -- a regular or a prepaid card. From their perspective, it's just a credit card.
