Catherine Elizabeth Anne BENDELL (nee JAMES) born 1858
« on: Wednesday 24 May 17 15:07 BST (UK) »
I've been researching a friend's tree and have landed in Jersey. (may be an excuse for a visit in future!) Catherine Bendell was widowed in 1906 and some time after that moved to Jersey to be with her daughter, Mabel RAYMOND, born 1891. I've found German registration cards dated February 1941 for Catherine, Mabel and her husband, James Raymond born 1892. At the time all three were living at Marais du Val, St Brelade, Jersey. Can anyone please tell me how I can find out if they survived the war. Thank you in advance.

The fact that you have found their reg cards indicates that they did survive the war. If they had died during the Occupation their cards would have been destroyed.

Thank you for your very prompt reply. That is very interesting. I wasn't holding out much hope for Catherine, it must have been very hard for an 80+ lady in occupied Jersey. Do you have any idea where I could find any information post 1941?

Catherine's death is recorded on Page 147 of the index mentioned above and James is on Page 193 of the same register.

Thank you for your replies. My friend was really surprised about the Jersey connection although she does remember as a child some family members going to Jersey to search for something. I think I'll have to take up the subscription and a visit sounds quite a good idea too!

A subscription is good value if you have a lot of Jersey research to do. The Raymond family seem to go back for at least a couple of generations but the 2 ladies were English.

Many Jersey Anglican BMDs are now on Ancestry.
