Help needed with church records
« on: Wednesday 24 May 17 19:18 BST (UK) »
Hello, I've managed to trace my family tree using the online census records but I've come to a stand still as now I need to go back further than 1800 and have no idea how to. Looking for relatives around smeeton westerby, any help/advice would be great.

Presumably you have approximate age, date and place of birth from the Censuses. Try entering those names , dates and places into the following site

www.familysearch.org

or just the name date and county into

www.freereg.org

For those who, like me, were a bit bemused - Smeeton Westerby is in Leicestershire ;D

The GenUKI page (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LEI/SmeetonWesterby) states that the parish register dates from 1852.
For earlier times, the parish was Kibworth Beauchamp.

Parish records will almost certainly be held at Leicestershire Archives.

Very few abodes are given in the Kibworth registers for baptisms and burials before 1813, after which there are numerous for Smeeton. Also few abodes for marriages prior to 1837.

Smeeton Westerby baptisms, weddings and funerals were held at Kibworth, and the original PRs note whether the person was from SW, KH or KB - (ie Smeeton Westerby, Kibworth Harcourt or K Beauchamp) - I forget how long back these abodes were noted, but I'm sure it precedes 1800 as I've had cause to look back well into the 1700s in these registers and seen it then.

Sorry, I should have gone to the right optician. All baptisms and burials have the key to KB, KH or SW. and in full from 1813.
