Need advice about my Great Grandfather
« on: Thursday 25 May 17 08:57 BST (UK) »
Hi Guys,

My first post but I needed some help/advice/pointers in trying to trace my great grandfather. As my grandfather died when I was young, my main source of information is my grandmother (the daughter-in-law of the person in question), so I don't have a lot of info but I will list what I do know.

I know he came from Mayo in Ireland and moved to Tyneside in England at some point prior to 1906. My grandmother seemed to believe he came from Knock but I cant be sure. She also told me that some of the Moran moved to Pennsylvania, possibly Pittsburgh but I shouldn't imagine this helps.

His name was Patrick Moran and he died in 1945 in Hebburn. He is on the 1911 census living with my great grandmother Elizabeth McBride. On the census his birth year is given as abt 1879 and the place is given just as Mayo, Ireland.

I have a copy of their marriage certificate but this has made things more difficult. He was married under the name Patrick Morrin. Moran was originally written but has been crossed out. His father's name is listed, also as Patrick.

I can find a Pat Morin in the 1901 census living as a boarder in Tyneside. The age fits but I cannot be sure its him.

Looking at Irish records I can find many possibilities if his name was Patrick Moran but I cant find any Patrick Morrins listed that seem to fit.

Would really appreciate any help because at present I am lost.

I would start by finding them on the 1939 register. This will give a DOB which should help.

So I eventually found him on the 1939 register. Surprisingly his d.o.b is listed as 19.03.1887. This is significantly younger than all other records I have.

After looking at the original document I think it could read 1881 which makes more sense.

Thanks Jolee. The Castletown family are under consideration. The reason I am hesitant is that there is a Pat Morrin living in Tyneside in the 1901 census. If thats the Patrick Morrin in question I think it unlikely (although not impossible) he would be in Ireland in 1901.
