I'm still puzzled by the mention of the child whose name appears to be Vera Holt born in Sheffield on 16.7.16

I cannot find any birth on free bmd that would match that.

Have a look at the record that I mentioned in reply #14 and see what you think.

I think 1911 specified number of children of the wife
If the first child was from a first wife he wouldn't be counted among the 3

That's what i.m finding on some censuses anyway
My ggrandads hospital records  1920 said he was second of 11 children
But his father and mother down as having 6 children 3 living....the mother had same surname as  father's first wife so I hadn't realised this younger women using different first name was actually a stepmum

Won't be able to check the 1911 for this as the couple did not marry until 1914.

Free bmd lists six children with the Thexton/Holt combination, two of whom died very quickly which leaves four.  Three of these children are mentioned in the attestation, the fourth born after in 1924.  That then leaves this Vera? Holt born 1916.  Where does she fit in?  ::)

Although this is sidetracking from the poster's original query!  :D

I don't think that is the right Vera, Annie.  According to the attestation papers she was born on 16 July 1916.  That should put her birth in the September quarter or December quarter.  Assuming of course that her birth was registered.

I did wonder if the Holt was a second christian name as some children are given their mother's maiden name as one of their names.

I read the name as Vera but I did suggest someone else looking in case I misread the name.  It does appear that the first letter of the name has been written over.  I gave the details of what to look for on Reply #14.

I would appreciate someone else looking just to check what they think the first name is.

Wow you lot are amazing! I will need a bit of time to look through all this info! So we think Thomas Gilbert was Sarah and And Thomas Rowland Thextons son? It is strange that he didn't' live with them?
Thomas Rowland worked on the railways traveling around a lot so the children were born in different places. He died in Nairobi in the war and was buried on the day his daughter Pat's postcard arrived to him. (I have photos of this and some of his letters.)It's very sad.

I have just looked at 1911 census.Yes it says 5 children born and one has died.I was counting the child Rowland Wynne in this but he's not born until 1911 so there is one missing....
