What ever happened to Edward Bevan
« on: Friday 26 May 17 04:16 BST (UK) »
I have Edward Bevan b Hangrove Herefordshire 1850 , 1881 census, with wife Eliza b 1855 "no maiden as yet" and daughter Annie age 5, Annie married Thomas long 1898 in Pontypool.  Am about to get marriage cert for Thomas and Annie, for MOTHERS MAIDEN NAME, as the story goes when Annie was 6 the father left for work one morning never to return an extensive search was made for him, but  alas never heard from again. I cannot locate Edward after 1881 census, can anyone out there kindly have a look for him after 1881. I have not yet located marriage? for Edward and Eliza hopefully Eliza maiden name may shed some light

How does this fit? Annie Bevan birth registered Monmouth March quarter 1875. Mother's maiden name Burford..Still looking for possible marriage.

P S . If I have the correct record for Edward in 1881, living at 36 Edward Street, Cardiff, Eliza is described as his SISTER. (Dep on brother)

PP S. The names William Bevan and Caroline. Burford appear on the same page of the register March 1872 Monmouth.

Yes I agree it says Eliza is his sister not wife.  Both down as unmarried.

So could Annie have been the daughter of Eliza?  Would make sense she was dependent on brother if she had a child on her own.  Although no relationship to Edward or Eliza is given for Annie  :-\

Hi, The 1881 census is a strange one, for info- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2W9-SHJ1

Going back to what is known on census. Annie was b Annie Florence Bevan in 1874/1875

1911 gives age as 36 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X7PH-23T with family has Eliza Bevan, visitor, age 56, widow, b Caerleon

1901 gives age as 26 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9TY-X8Y

Possible death https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVHM-W9VS

There is this marriage, a possible connection.

Marriages Sep Q 1871   Same page
Bevan    Edward        Pontypool    11a   185
BRINKWORTH    Elizabeth        Pontypool    11a   185

Possible..this Reg District covers Caerleon

Name:   Mother's Maiden Surname:
BEVAN, ANNIE  FLORENCE  Mmn   BRINKWORTH
GRO Reference: 1874  D Quarter in NEWPORT  Volume 11A  Page 182

Bapt https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KCTK-68H

Annie Florence Bevan
Baptism 7 Feb 1875
Place   Llangattock Juxta Caerleon, Monmouthshire, Wales
Father Edward, occ Haulier
Mother Elizabeth
Source: Monmouthshire Baptisms

I would get Annie's MC to see if she lists Edward as father, you would not obtain Mmn from marriage, with English/Welsh cert.

Marriages Sep Q 1897
BEVAN Annie Florence  Pontypool 11a   236
Long    Thomas    Pontypool    11a   236

Was Edward indexed twice in 1881 Census?
If he was away maybe explains the other strange 1881 Census.

Edward Bevan, 28 (1853), Lodger, Mar*, Coachman, born Llangwm, Hereford, England
Lodging in Llanelly, Breconshire

Who knows Trish, this family apart from Annie a bit of an enigma, not easily finding any background on parents..how about you? Waiting if OP has any other info...
