Could he have died and she was just told he had gone away to cover this up?  If she was only 6 might be a way of telling her but doesn't really fit with what you say about an extensive search :-\

Is there anything in a newspaper about it if he genuinely went missing?

This one fairly close age wise

Death in Liverpool
Dec 1888
Edward Bevan age 40
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

all i have is from an older cousin who I visited last week she told me that her grandmother ANNIE had told her mother that they were a happy family he left one morning never to return. as I have just picked up on this I have had no chance as yet to do a personal newspaper search. anything is a possibility can't rule out anything

Not finding any other Bevan/Brinkworth births within area around time on GRO, unless mistranscription.

Also above marriage not showing on FreeBMD unless mistranscription.

Maybe the BC for Annie Florence would help...

Annie Florence Bevan b 2-nov-1874 Caerleon Monmouthshire, mother maiden name Brinkworth, it does look like Edward Bevan was on the 1881 twice Occupation Coachman on both. cannot find a Hangrove Herefordshire, although favour Llanwgm ???
