Joseph Newick x 2 birth dilemma
« on: Friday 26 May 17 10:15 BST (UK) »
Hello

I have recently been working on our NEWICK FT but have come across a dilemma

There appear to be 2 Joseph Newicks who were b @1852, though Free BMD lists only one

The problem is one Joseph Newick was recorded as m in New York in 1873 (an exellent record on Family Search) son of Joseph & Louisa, b Birmingham, GB (aged 23) - nearest Free BMD birth is 1852 Birmingham. His father Joseph emigrated to USA @1853 as far as I can find. He also appears on the 1855, 1865 and 1870 US C as son of Joseph & Louisa. All state b England, presumably b just before emigrating, though I can find no m for Joseph & Louise Devey in England

The other Joseph was living in Walsall in 1871 C (aged 18) b @1852 Birmingham, single, son of William & Elizabeth; he may have d 1882 Lichfield, Staffs aged 30

Newick is not a particularly common name, but I can't fathom this. There must have been 2 Josephs b @1852 Birmingham or is there a simple explanation? Any assistance would be appreciated

Thanks

GRO birth index has this one

Jun 1852 Birmingham

Newick Joseph mothers maiden name Lovelock

Presume this is the son of William & Elizabeth.

Marriage Mar 1843 Birmingham has William Newick & Elizabeth Lovelock among the couples

Here's a dilemma

Family tree has a brother Samuel James born in New York and a sister Amelia born in Birmingham.

The sister Amelia has mothers name Lovelock same as the other Joseph so possibly the trees are mixed up.

I wondered if your Joseph was born to Louisa and is under her surname but can't find him  :(

What is the source for Devey which you mention in your post as Louisa's surname?

I see there is a Joseph Devey birth reg in Aston, Dec qtr 1852, but his mother's maiden name is listed as Whitworth.

OK I now see Devey as mmn on the New York marriage record, 1 October 1873.

Joseph's age of 23 in that record suggests a birth abt 1850, which if right would mean he was born before the 1851 census.  Has Louisa been traced in that census?

Just about to ask how many emigrated together.

So his birth is either one of those that just slipped through the net and was never registered or the surname is completely awry.  I suspect it could be the former.  There are some you just never find no matter how hard you look.

Was Joseph senior from Bristol?

Is this him in 1851 Warwickshire

Joseph Newick 26 head unmarried retail something?
Mary Ann Oram 36 sister married
Sarah Oram 14 niece
Emely Parker 20 servant

so if that is him he isn't yet with Louisa nor is he married
