Ancestors of the Convict, John Disson
« on: Saturday 27 May 17 07:24 BST (UK) »
I would like to find the ancestors of a second great grandfather, John Disson (ca 1816-1861) who was convicted and sentenced to transportation for seven years for stealing a bolt of cloth from a shop in Curzon Street, Mayfair.  The report of his trial is in The Proceedings of the Old Bailey, London’s Central Criminal Court, 1674-1913 - JOHN DISSON, Theft > simple larceny, 27th February 183; Reference Number: t18370227-803.   At the trial, "Alice Williams, Cranford-mews; Thomas Pratt, of Devonshire-street; and John Williams gave the prisoner a good character".

John was transported to NSW on "Asia", arriving in Dec 1837, and obtained his Certificate of Freedom in March 1844.  The certificate recorded his native place as London, trade or calling labourer and year of birth 1815.

In 1851, in Shoalhaven, NSW he married Eleanor Mary Wheatley (1828-1903).   "Ellen", a housemaid was from March, Cambridgeshire and migrated to NSW, arriving on "Elizabeth" in 1845.
They had four children.  On 4 Jan 1861, John died from snake bite in Terara, NSW, a report of which was published in The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser (NSW ) on 12 Jan 1861.

John's death certificate recorded his age 44, born in London, father John Disson, a butcher and mother Mary Ann (nee) Williams.   A Mary Ann Williams was christened on 18 Nov 1798 at St. George the Martyr's, Southwark, Surrey, England, and a John Dyason, born on 08 Oct 1816 to parents John Dyason & Mary, was christened on 01 Nov 1816, at St. George the Martyr's, Southwark, Surrey, England (familysearch.org); these are possibly John and his mother.

Does anyone have any more information on this family?

The "ss" is often written or printed as long s (looks like an uncrossed f) and small s. I have seen this transcribed as ps and other oddities eg ts, d and other letter combinations. If Dyason does not pan out it might be worth trying Dipson or straight Dyson -- the "i" with long s might look like a y.

Note that trials at the Old Bailey were under either the London Jury or the Middlesex Jury.

There's a John Disson baptised 7 June 1761 in Kensington, s/o James & Ann, butcher from Graval Pits.

Also, a John Disson, master butcher, taking an apprentice in 1795 in Worcester.

A Newgate Prison Calendar in FindMyPast gives your John's trade as a painter.
