Thank you again heatherjulie.  I have seen some of these dates and address before so I don't think the 1871 birth date is right.  The rest of them is the right family but what happened to him later?

I had the following line of enquiry https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/1687/31793_221290-00150/737190?backurl=https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/15012730/person/29569736199/facts/citation/155140093303/edit/record

As being in the Boxer Rebellion and having a naval medal but I'm not sure if I have the right person because of so many with the same name again!!

Thank you heatherjulie - that looks a hopeful, will do a little more research on them.  I've decided to try and research his potential Naval record (if I've got the right person) I will have to try and get sight of his record as this should have his next of kin on.

Since my last post on this topic I have researched William's naval record.  I found a William McMullen involved in the Boxer rebellion and that he landed in China during the Boxer Rebellion on ship named HMS Marathon transferred in 1902 to Duke of Wellington. Regimental No 285846
Medal No 6584 HMS Goliath Reg No 182886

This could be him or I like the other suggestion from someone that he may have never married and became a priest.  I have a wedding photograph of a nephew and it has 2 priests amongst the guests.  I don't know where to start researching that!!
