Memorial Tablet in Springsure Presbyterian Church, Queensland
« on: Saturday 27 May 17 20:28 BST (UK) »
I am interested in a Robert Patton, late of Cardbeign, Springsure, who died 22nd April 1878 in Levuka, Fiji. I have found a newspaper article which mentioned that his friends wished to erect a tablet to his memory in the Presbyterian Church, Springsure. The church is  now closed but I wonder if anyone has a photograph of the tablet in the church (if one was actually erected)? A long shot I know!

Cant help you much but why not email the Woolshed Information Centre at Springsure they might know something.

Hello,
Just wondering where you are?  Just thought I'd let you know I live about 40minutes from Springsure, know a few people in the area, and will, in the next few days, check around for you about the memorial tablet.  Please let me know if you have already been successful and I will leave it to yourself.  Hope to hear from you and then decide what I need to do.  Also if there is anymore info. you may want, let me know, I can even phone a few places if needed. bee

Hello bee,
Thank you so much for your kind offer. I live in Northern Ireland so am a little distance away. I emailed the Woolshed Information Centre as Gerry suggested but as yet have had no reply.

I would very much appreciate any help you are able to give. I am trying to tie up a few loose ends. Robert Patton was brought in the house which is our family home and I am trying to put together a short history of his family.

Hello again,
Yes there was a tablet erected, have been speaking to a man who heard about Robert PATTON.  Have been given another person to contact to find out where the tablet was located now, so will get back to you as soon as I can with more info. and hopefully photos.  The man I was speaking to also had heard that PATTON brought men out from Fiji as workers (have you heard of this).  Will be in contact as soon as I have heard more.  Is the tablet all you want, have you acquired enough info. on this man or would you like me to send what I dig up? bee
p.s.  A couple of things on Trove (newspaper) of interest.

Thank you so much for doing this for me. The information I have about Robert Patton came mainly from Trove - a wonderful resource!

No, I didn't know that he brought out workers from Fiji. Perhaps that is why, at the time of his death, he was on a trip to the South Seas. Have you any idea how I would go about getting a death certificate for him? Would records be held in Fiji?

While I started off just wanting a photo of the memorial tablet I have now become very interested in his life. It would be nice to be able to tell his story in as much detail as I can.

I would be very grateful for any additional information you are able to dig up.
