Stewart Macdonald- brick wall
« on: Sunday 28 May 17 09:07 BST (UK) »
Stewart/Stuart (female)  married Peter McLellan 17/01/1813 at St Marys Cathedral Edinburgh.
They had 4 children, Peter-1814, James 1817, Mary Lothian 1819, Archibald 1821.
Who were Stewarts Family??? On the marriage docs it says apart from father unnamed a silversmith the marriage was witnessed by her parents and sisters and a ??? Macdonald jnr. Is that Stewarts brother/Uncle??
On all the childrens christenings her name is definitely Stewart.
Any help PLEASE!!!  :) :) :)

Hi Elan

The record I have looked at has Peter McLelan, shipowner of the Isle of Mist, and Stuart MacDonald daughter of MacDonald master silversmith in Edinburgh. Hugh MacDonald Jun is said to be of Boisdale.

It might be worth looking at directories of Edinburgh for master silversmiths with the surname MacDonald.

Might it be worth looking at the sponsors on the baptisms for Mary Lothian and Archibald as they are Macdonalds to  see if there is a connection?

William

Added Modified my original post as I clearly had a senior moment and did not read the title properly!

I have a feeling 'Mist' should actually be (South 'UIST'), Outer Hebrides/Western Isles, Inverness-shire & that particular Hugh MacDonald may have been of the Clanranald family who were the owners of South Uist/Benbecula prior to Colonel John Gordon of Cluny?

You are absolutely correct,Annie. I clearly need to make a visit to Specsavers! "Peter McLelan, shipowner, of the Island of Uist".

As William suggests, and looking to the NLS Post Office directories of the time, there is at least one M'Donald silversmith showing in 1804, a John M'Donald www.archive.org/stream/denovancosedinbu1804dire#page/140/mode/2up/search/silver
