GRO index.
« on: Sunday 28 May 17 10:52 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Just checked for a registration of birth via the GRO index iro an Ann Jefferson, whose birth was registered Q2 1842 in Carlisle & her mother's maiden name is recorded as 'A.I.Y'. Does anyone know what this means or is it just a typo? I was expecting to see either the name 'Clayton' or 'Rowell'.

Regards

Coreen

Perhaps they couldn't read the name. Could it be Airey?
Although Robert Jefferson + Ruth Airey did not marry until 1845 (2 March, St Mary, Carlisle), they have a daughter, Ann, 8, in 1851.
Also son William, 5, daughter Mary, 1. Possible birth registrations for those two in Carlisle, mother Airey.
Although of course Robert may have been married before, and there's also a 12 year old daughter in 1851.

Haven't seen anything like that before, maybe those were the only legible letters in the name?

There's an A Y in Clayton but  ???
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Thanks for taking the time to have a look at this & to reply. May order the B/C to see if it's any clearer.

There are Jefferson-Rowell births in Carlisle around the time, including Robert, June 1841, and Sarah, Dec 1843. But no Jeffersons there with Clayton as mother's maiden name until Jane in Sep 1855.

They could all be children of Robert Jefferson, tailor. Wife is called Ann in 1851 and 1861.
A baptism in April 1842 at St Mary Carlisle, of Ann Jefferson, daughter of Robert + Ann, but no sign in the census? Or the death indexes?
Also a baptism same place, 8 Sep 1844, of Ann, daughter of Robert + Ruth Jefferson.

Had a look at those and think the Jefferson-Rowell births are probably the ones i'm looking for. Robert Jefferson & Ann Clayton married in 1829 but I suspect she may have been illegitimate, (an Ann Clayton was baptised in 1814 & only mother, Mary, is recorded). Maybe Ann used her natural father's surname on her children's birth registration???
