GUTTERIDGE family Medbourne area around 1780
« on: Sunday 28 May 17 10:59 BST (UK) »
Mary CLAYPOLE (the daughter of Henry Claypole and Elizabeth Green) was born in Medbourne in 1789
Her sister Ann CLAYPOLE was born in Medbourne in 1799

Mary CLAYPOLE married Francis GUTTERIDGE (b abt 1785) in Medbourne on August 20th 1822
Ann CLAYPOLE married Robert GUTTERIDGE in Leicester on July 1st 1824

The sisters were witnesses at each other's wedding.

Are these two GUTTERIDGE boys brothers? and if so who were their parents?

Thank you - Alan

I hadn't actually found a definitive birth year for either of the GUTTERIDGE boys. There is a Somerby baptism in the name of Francis in 1756 but this appears to be the baptism of a young adult Quaker. There is also a Frances (daughter of Francis and Ann Gutteridge) in 1858

There is then a marriage licence for a Francis Gutteridge to Elizabeth Gamble dated  1780

I haven't found anything for Robert

So, applying legal and scientific tests to the evidence:

Are Francis and Robert GUTTERIDGE brothers: the children of Francis GUTTERIDGE and Elizabeth GAMBLE

On the balance of probabilities (50% + 1 more likely than not): Yes
Beyond reasonable doubt (90-95% certain): Most probably yes
Scientifically / Mathematically certain (100%): Not proven

I'm not sure how many GUTTERIDGE families there would have been in Medbourne at the time. I guess too that following convention Francis as first born would have been named after his father.

Many thanks Alan

There's a will for Francis Gutteridge of Somerby naming Francis, Elizabeth, their children and Thomas Gamble of Kingscliffe. Was wondering if it helps any further down the line to connect the dots as there are 8 children inc. Robert and Francis listed.

Will year 1803, granted 1808.

Children listed in the will in this order

William  Ann  Elizabeth  Francis  Lucy  Sarah  Thomas  Robert
Willsy

Ward, Newark (Nottingham), Leicester, Scarborough
Warren, Northampton, Leicester
Moore, Leicestershire
Hunt, Leicestershire
Kirkman, Leicestershire
Hurst, Leicester, Stowmarket
Kendrick, Leicestershire
Eld, Leicestershire
Essex Edey/Eady Elsden/Elsdon

Hi Willsy

Thanks for the pointer. I have had a look at the will and it seems this relates to an earlier Francis Gutteridge. The will describes his wife as Ann - and it is his son Francis who is married to Elizabeth and linked to the Gamble family. Consequently that means the eight children named (including the Francis and Robert of my original post) are the writer of the will's grandchildren.

Cheers Alan
