Hi everyone.

My 3x great-grandmother Johanna Retallick migrated to Australia in 1856 from St Columb Major. I am looking to find the fate of her 3 sisters.

Her parents were William Retallick and Catherine (Kitty) Pill who were married in St Columb Major in 1828.  I have background information about William and Kitty's families prepared by the late Susan Old and they are not the subject of this inquiry.

The 1841 census shows:

William Retallick     40 Ag Lab
Cartherine              40
Betsey                   11                    (Baptism 15 November 1829)
William                    9                    (Baptism 3 June 1832)
Martha                     7                    (Baptism 2 March 1834)
Mary                        7                    (Baptism 2 March 1834)
Johanna                   4                    (Baptism 1 January 1837)

The 1851 census shows:

William Retallick     50 Labourer
Catherine               51
Martha                   17
Johanna                 15

On the 1851 census I have found these candidates for the other children:
  • Elizabeth Retallick age 21 servant in the house of John Tonkyn in St Columb Major
  • William Retallick age 15 as an apprentice in the house of blacksmith Samuel Couch in St Columb Major
  • Mary Retallack age 18 as a servant in the house of Richard Tinney in Tregavethan.  Mary the servant, Richard Tinney and his children are shown as born in St Columb and Mrs Tinney as born in "Little Columb", which may be St Columb Minor.

William (junior) migrates to Australia in 1854 and eventually dies in Rutherglen, Victoria in 1902.

Johanna migrates to Australia in 1856 and eventually dies as Johanna Yates in Wahgunyah, Victoria in 1876.

The 1861 census shows Catherine as Kitty with granddaughter Kate Retallick (baptism 29 October 1854) who is the illegitimate daughter of Johanna and eventually migrates to Australia in 1869.

William (senior) appears to have died, possibly in 1856 but there are a couple of candidates I haven't confirmed as yet.

I have tried searching the 1861 census for women named Elizabeth, Martha and Mary who were born in St Columb Major and were Wives and then back-tracking the marriages without that leading to a bride named Retallick.

There is a marriage for an Elizabeth Retallack registered in St Columb Major in 1854.  Banns of Marriage for Crantock in 1854 show the marriage between Richard Hamley "of this parish" and Elizabeth Retallack "sojourner".  Not clear if this could be Elizabeth/Betsey.

Any assistance with finding the fate of Elizabeth/Betsey, Martha and Mary after the 1851 census would be gratefully received.

think this is the Richard & Elizabeth whose banns were read in Crantock

1861 Biscovey, St Blazey RG9/1546 folio 131 pg 8
Richard Hambly head mar 25 tin miner b. Crantock
Elizabeth wife 27
Caroline dau 4
Richard son 1
all born St Blazey except Richard senior

birth regs
Caroline Hambly sept qtr 1856 St Austell vol 5c pg 130 mother's maiden name Retallack
Richard Hambly dec qtr 1859 St Austell vol 5c pg 146 mother's maiden name Retallick

so doesn't look to be your Elizabeth.

think I may have found Elizabeth. There's a marriage 7 Aug 1860 in Holy Trinity, Plymouth of Thomas Baker & Elizabeth Retallick

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KCSQ-N97

Elizabeth gives her age as 29, father William, a labourer, her address as Hoe Streeet, witnesses are Elizabeth Mew & Maria Keightley. Thomas is a steward on HMGB Violet and his father James, a whitesmith.
1861 census has Elizabeth Baker aged 32, married, a nurse born St Columb Major in the household of Henry Owen in Leighton Terrace, Plymouth RG9/1442 folio 11 pg 15. Haven't spotted her as yet in 1871 and by 1881 she has been widowed & is in Totnes RG11/2176 folio 106 pg 11.  There don't appear to be any children born with the first few years of the marriage.

Possible death reg for her
Elizabeth Baker 84 june qtr 1914 Totnes vol 5b pg 212

Thanks very much, Osprey.

1. William - That's the death I have considered before.  The GRO index shows him as 66 which is too old but people make mistakes and there are transcription errors.  There was another William in 1858 but I see now he is shown as 71 which is even older.  The 1856 record looks like the best fit.

2. That Mary appears to travel with Philippa 'Rettallack' age 44, possibly her mother? (Possible Phillipa Retallick with daughter Mary in St Wenn in 1841.)

3. Crantock marriage - It's always good to rule out suspects.

4. That looks like a very real possibility.  Thank you!

On the 1871 census there is an Elizabeth Baker, Condition W(idow), Servant (Cook) in the home of John W(ebber) Chaster (transcribed on Ancestry as Charter), Mayor of Totnes.

She is shown as 44 and born in St Austell, but those details were presumably given by Mr or Mrs Chaster.

This William is buried in unconsecrated ground, grave 633, while Kitty in in consecrated ground, grave 289.  Would that potentially rule this William out as Kitty's husband?

I don't think so. I have relatives who I know were baptised in the CofE, and in later life they changed their worship to non-conformity and they were buried in unconsecrated ground. They appear to have been buried in single graves, possibly cheaper that way.
