the Retallick family in St Wenn appear to have left before the 1851 census. They have an Amelia Jane baptised in 1843 and then no sign. Their Mary was baptised in 1840 so wouldn't be the 20 year old in 1853.

I can't seem to find any record of Philippa and Mary after they arrive in 1853.  A marriage or death record for Mary should confirm her parents.  I'll keep looking.

I still can't seem to find any record of Philippa and Mary after they arrive in 1853 - but I have revisited the shipping list which has a column headed "By Whom Engaged" to see if they were going to work for the same person.

For Philippa the entry reads "Gone to her relative Mr Mathews (possibly Mathers) off Corio St, Geelong" and for Mary there is a "Ditto" symbol.  I am confident from this that Philippa and Mary are related and travelling together and so this is not my Mary.

Yes, it appears this family settled around Niagra, New York.

The age is not quite right, but I wonder if this could be Mary, close to where Elizabeth was in 1861?

In 1861 there is a Mary Retallick age 25 born St Columb as a Servant in the home of George Tulley, Civil Parish: Trinity Ecclesiastical Parish: Plymouth St. Andrew, Folio: 66 Page: 55 Schedule: 318, Address: 4 Pins Lane.

A Mary Retallick marries in Plymouth in 1868.  The groom appears to be either Philip Burley or Samuel Pike but I have not found either of them on the 1871 census.

EDIT: There is a Philip Burley on the 1881 and later censuses in Plymouth with wife Amelia.

Marriages for Philip Burley and Amelia Reid in Plymouth in 1877.

A death for Mary Burley in Plymouth in 1875.

Coincidentally, a Philip Burley born in Exeter (father's name Michael) around the right age marries Ann Crapp in St Columb Major in 1857.  This family is in St Columb Major on the 1861 census and (according to familysearch.org although I can't get the image to show at the moment) they are in Plymouth in 1871.

Just thought I'd throw that one in to save anyone else from exploring that option.
