John Gall 13230 Scots Guards
« on: Monday 29 May 17 08:40 BST (UK) »
It's a long shot, however does anyone know if a photograph of John Gall from Galashiels exists or any info on him, John served in France during WW1 and was wounded on the 15th September  1916 during the advance towards the village of lesbouef, any replies etc would be greatly appreciated,
Sharon

Photo would be a long shot although local newspapers often carried photos.

Otherwise, his service record is on Findmypast.   The war diary of 1st Battalion, which he belonged to at the time, has a detailed description of the action on 15 September which resulted in considerable losses.    The battalion went into the attack that day with 17 officers and 690 men and came out with 3 officers and 221 men.  He was one of the 218 men wounded in the right arm.  He was evacuated back to UK via a hospital in Le Havre and by 23 September he is transferred to the reserve battalion at home.  He went back to France in November 1917 remaining until the end of the war.

If you need any more help, shout.

The newspapers on Findmypast produced a number of hits of various Scottsh papers when I searched on Galashiels but nothing on John Gall.

Knowing his battalion and when he joined, it may be worth contacting the Scots Guards archivist at Wellington Barracks London SW1E 6HQ to see whether they have photos.  http://scotsguards.org/history/archives/
