ALICE BROWNING Alverstoke or Gosport (TOLCHER?)
« on: Monday 29 May 17 12:39 BST (UK) »
The wife of Benjamin Browning (d. 1807) was called Alice (d. 1808), but I don't know her maiden name. It may have been Tolcher, as one of their granddaughters was christened Emma Tolcher. Tolcher looks a lot more like a surname than an ordinary Christian name, so I imagine it comes from an ancestor. Benejamin Browning lived in Alverstoke or Gosport, or thereabouts.

Hi

Welcome to rootschat

There is a baptism of a Benjamin Browning in Gosport with parents Benjamin & Alice on 8th April 1799.

A possible marriage of his parents at St Thomas, Portsmouth 12 November 1791 - Alice's surname was Blake

Is this possibly your family  :-\

Thanks. I have a Benjamin Browning RN born "about 1800", so that is almost certainly the same person. I shall follow up on the Blake family. That still leaves the mystery of where "Tolcher" came from.

Could it be a godparent?

For some reason I didn't think of that, but yes, it could.
