Hannah Rushforth after 1841 census in?Worsbrough
« on: Monday 29 May 17 15:06 BST (UK) »
I am trying to discover what happened to Hannah Rushforth.  In the 1841 census she was aged 40 and living in Poor House Dale, Worsboro with her son William aged 11.

I think her maiden name was Gelder and she married George Rushforth 13 July 1829 in St Mary's church.  I have found a death for George Rushworth in 1839 and have his death certificate.  I have also discovered that William and most of his family emigrated to Australia in 1875.

However, Hannah remains a mystery!   I know she did not marry George Fox in 1843 as I have that certificate and Hannah's maiden name appears to have been Senior.  I have also found the marriage of Hannah Senior to a Joshua Rushforth and the death of Joshua.

I have not found Hannah in any census after 1841 or found a death for her.

Just hoping that someone may come up with a suggestion as to where to look next!

Thank you Carole.

Unfortunately there is also a Hannah Gelder baptised in Worsbrough 19 June 1808 so do not know which one is mine which is why I am trying to find Hannah after 1841 so I could be sure of her birthplace or age etc. But thank you very much for sending me the information. It is very much appreciated.

Given she's 40 in 1841, and ages were rounded down, is this a possibility?

Hannah Gelder
Baptism    19 Jul 1796, Worsborough,
Father    Francis Gelder

I have found a death for George Rushworth in 1839 and have his death certificate

Deaths March qtr 1839
George Rushworth   Ecclesfield    22   107

Surname Rushworth on death but Rushforth on marriage and 1841 census.  That George was 55 when he died so a lot older than Hannah

Hello and thanks for the messages.

This is my research so far;

William married Sarah Cope 22 March 1852 and named his Father as George occ Tailor.

William baptised 6 June 1830 in Worsbrough with parents named as George (occ weaver) and Anna

George married Hannah Gelder  13 July 1829 in Worsbrough witnesses  JOHN and MARY Gelder

William and Hannah living together at the time of the 1841 census with no sign of George so presumed he had died.

George's death was registered by Hannah and his occupation was given as an East India Pensioner.  Further research stated that he had enlisted 6 Jan 1804, born in Yorkshire, was aged 34 in 1820, and previous occupation given as a weaver.

Hannah and George are 2 of my 'dead ends'.  George could have been born anywhere in Yorkshire as there are many variations of Rushforth.  I was hoping that Hannah may have married again, died before 1851 or I could find her on a census after 1841. Difficult to prove which is the Hannah who married George but I will keep looking.

Thanks for trying to help.

But what about  Rushworth as opposed to Rushforth?  Is the name on the 1839 death cert Rushworth as shown on Freebmd and the GRO online?

Are you sure you have the right family?

No, I am not 100% sure that I have the right family!  However the Lord Clive Military Fund Pension Registers and Payment Books have George as Rushforth not Rushworth.  Also my maternal ancestors alternate between Rushforth and Rushworth so I think I am on the right track.  The joys of family research!
