James John LICKFOLD, born 1825, St. George in the East
« on: Monday 29 May 17 16:03 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have a note that James John LICKFOLD died in the 3rd quarter of 1851.   However, that note also suggests that his father, James John LICKFOLD, born 1808, died in the same year.   I have not been able to verify these details.   Can SKS help please ???

Thank you,

BAC3

The GRO has this, which is James the younger.

LICKFOLD, JAMES       22
1851  S Quarter
SAINT GEORGE (IN THE EAST)
Volume 02  Page 70

However Freebmd has that but also has

LICKFOLD    James
St Geo East    2   76

This doesn't appear on the GRO site, so perhaps the 0 has been mistaken for a 6 and transcribed incorrectly?

Thanks groom,

The age 22, making DOB 1829, is absolutely correct!!!   For some unknown reason, increasing senility probably, I quoted 1825 in the caption  :-[

Delighted groom and well researched,

Strange that his father supposedly died the same year..........do we know the cause for "Younger"?
Possibly respiratory for both of them, one of the curses of Victoriana.

I've just checked the burials for Wycliffe Congregational Church from July to September 1851 and if his father did die within weeks of him, he wasn't buried there.

There definitely is a registration on the Civil Registration Death Index, 1837-1915 for St George in the East with the number Vol 2 page 76, but it doesn't seem to have been transcribed onto the GRO index, unless anyone else can find it.

Added: I think what has happened is that it has been read as 76 when it is a 0 with the "tail" of the 7 from the entry above making it look like a 6. It has been recorded as both on Freebmd.

Following on from that, the trees on Ancestry have the wrong death for James the Elder as can be seen from the age given on the GRO site and the burial register. The death is for the son.

I agree that it should be vol 2 page 70
There is only one James Lickfold death that quarter
Number of names per page then was 10.
FreeBMD have 10 names with ref vol 2 page 70, and 11 with ref vol 2 page 76
Remember too that the new GRO index was made using films of the death registers, so they should know what page they were looking at.

There's a James Lickfold in St George in the East in 1851, age is 62
Could he be the chap who died in Bermondsey in 1853 (I think in the workhouse), age 63?
His wife Susan was quite a bit younger than him in 1851, and is in the workhouse system in 1861, said to be a widow.
