Sorry Mabel and David - too excited, and 1870 was a typo, should have been 1780 - and none of the children were named after her parents (Thomas and Hannah).

There's one in both 1782 and 1783 for a Mary Buckley, same place, same parents  And 1786

Marriage was on 5 Jan at the parochial chapelry of St Chad's (does look like Grindred)

Familysearch appears to show four possible baptisms for Mary Buckley's in 1782/83 in Saddleworth as follows:

17th Feb 1782 & 23rd March 1783 to John Buckley & Hannah

31st March 1782 to James Buckley & Mary

13th October 1782 to John Buckley & Alice

Plus the one in 1780 that you found plus two more in 1784 & a further two more in 1785 all in Saddleworth.

Where has the 1780 birth date come from?

No idea sorry   The only date I actually have to go on is her age at burial so 1783 is the 'best' guess.

The James and Mary baptism in 1872 looks good though, given that their two eldest children are James and Mary  Will see if I can find any more info on that (the images are on Anc**y).

Ooops 1872 should read 1782, this typo business seems to be catching!

No worries David, I obviously read it as 1782 anyway! Guess the majority of my known ancestors were born in the 1800s so typing 17xx doesn't come naturally

There appear to be 11 Mary Buckley baptisms at St Chad's Saddleworth between 1782 and 1786    Still like the one with James and Mary as her parents, though the image only adds 'Walkhill / Wallhill' as the abode.

This is getting exciting, though more on the Grindrod side (way too many Buckleys). There's a burial at Saddleworth of a Sarah Grindrod aged 70 in 1833 (born around 1763), abode Burnage. William and family were in Burnage in 1841 so this could be William's mother (though William and Mary didn't have a daughter called Sarah  ).

Both made their mark.

witnesses Thomas Winterbottom and Buckley Holden

William and Mary's eldest son James (born 1809) married Annis (Anice) Winterbottom (born abt 1808 in Saddleworth). Wonder if her father was Thomas.. 

Added: Thomas Winterbottom and wife Hannah had several children baptised where their abode was shown as Burnage, which may suggest a link somewhere, though I can't yet find a baptism of an Annis / Anice

Have decided to go with the William Grindred and Mary Buckley marriage but doubt I'll get any further back on either side.
