Searching for my Great Grandfather, William Wilson, born about 1846, family word of mouth says Carlisle, but not confirmed. Died 1923 in Ballarat Victoria. Came to Australia before 1878 as he married Catherine McRae in Victoria in 1878, parents not listed on marriage or death record. He was a farmer at Glengower Victoria so I assume he had an agricultural background.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

When you say there are no parents mentioned on marriage or death record,are you looking at an index or the certificates?
Trees on Ancestry all seem to be copies but pob is all over Cumberland.One shows arrival in Victoria in 1865,might be worth a look at PROV.

Thank you for your reply, parents unknown is stated on the death cert. Just the index on marriage record. I would like to check the shipping lists try but don't have full access. His death notice in Ballarat gives his age as 77 so his birth year should be around 1846.
