Death certificates are often only as good as the memory of the person that filled them in. In this case the son may not have remembered his grandmothers name to provide to the registrar.

possibly also an abandonned child .adopted or

most likey  step child raised by a second wife
 mother  name unknown to informant

agree many grandchildren never use grans first names better to leave blank

i had an examole of grandchild putting first name of maternal instead of paternal  grandmother

Just a side note on Roger and his death in 1866. His burial details here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2DV-3NK2
St Peter's is also referred to as Old/New Dalbeth Cemetery. Lots of info here on RC for it on the Lanarkshire pages.

This is not as unusual as you might think.

I have quite a number of death certificates where the details of mother/father are missing. Some with no parents listed at all. Others with names of parents which have turned out to be totally incorrect when I have been lucky enough to get the deceased birth and or marriage certificate.

The lady who is my avator - my great grandmother - when registering her husband's death actually gave his grandmother's name instead of his mother  :)  She would have known both of them.

Yes, unfortunately. It happens if the informant doesn't know the correct information. I have several examples in my tree.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

A friend of mine lost his mum last October,he was very upset when registering her death and gave the wrong DOB. It caused lots of problems in the ensuing weeks as none of her banks could tie her to her bank accounts,so he had to go back and amend the details with the reg office.

Honestly, I Dont know what to say Monica.
From day 1 you and so many others have gone out of your way to help this lassie with her search. Last week I found out about John's dead children. Can't thank you all enough and especially for this gravestone pic. Bless you all😍 Just today I found Rodger in  census in Portglenone!! And!! Today 3 McFaddens!!. Will make a post once I've gathered all the evidence and post a brilliant link I foun d too in the next few days to help others.
Thank you all so very much😍
