Beechcroft House Kingsdown Road Swindon
« on: Tuesday 30 May 17 09:38 BST (UK) »
Has anyone got a picture of the big house that stood behind Arkells Brewery?

Now demolished like so many other grand houses  :(

My father remembers it but not the name so I looked on census and the best option seemed to be the above name.  I know the road is now called Beechcroft but was Kingsdown prior.

Thanks  :)

Is it possible it was called Boundary House? There is a lot on the area on Google, both textual and imagery. Swindon Library has put up a lot of historical stuff as well as private contributors.

There are Swindon experts on here, so you will probably get a resolution.

No not the Boundary House I know that one well.

I've looked through the old photo sets but without being certain of the name or what it looked like personally am a little in the dark!

If I could find a photograph of Beechcroft House to show could either rule it in or out.

Thanks for replying.

I have made one small step. It was definitely called Beechcroft House (now demolished). See if I can get any further.

Added: see https.//www.swindon.gov.uk/.../conservation area_appraisal.

pdf file with quite a bit of info. Not a photo of the house itself but The Lodge (179 Beechcroft Road) which is extant, lots of trees which were part of Beechcroft, see pics. at end of file.

There's an 1886 OS map but of more use is that of 1923.
