I have trouble with anything beyond first cousin,but the following just caught my eye on another thread,with apologies to ejones4765 for reproducing it,and congratulations for describing it!

But there is no such thing as a "3rd great aunt".  Anyone could have any number of great aunts; who's to say which is the third?
Rutter, Sampson, Swinerd, Head, Redman in Kent.  Others in Cheshire, Manchester, Glos/War/Worcs.

3rd signifies the generation, not the number of the aunt, you can have many 3x great aunts, uncles or cousins.

3rd signifies the generation, not the number of the aunt, you can have many 3x great aunts, uncles or cousins.
"3x great aunt" is written shorthand for "great great great aunt" or "great great grand aunt" .  There is no such thing as a 3rd great anything and definitely no such thing as a great, let alone 3x great, cousin.

I understand what a grandfather is; I understand what a great uncle is.  Could someone please enlighten me as to what a grand uncle or grand aunt is?  According to Ancestry I have a number of them, but I am mystified as to how such titles are acquired.
