Have you checked deaths at sea?  He could have drowned anywhere :-\

Any idea of an occupation for him?

Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos

Not specifically, but I did try FindMyPast and found nothing there - too many William Millers to go through all of them.

As for occupation, no definite information, except that he sold off in about 1829/1830 the land his family had owned since about 1660, so I would expect him to be a landed proprietor or a gentleman farmer.

If I can get back to Edinburgh I can check the abridgments of sasines to see if he bought any other land, but you have to search the abridgments one county at a time and there are 33 counties in Scotland so it could be a long job.

It is also possible that he emigrated after selling the family land, in which case there isn't much hope of finding him.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Yes it's not the best combination of names to pin down is it.

Hope something comes to light, he must have sold the lands for a reason  :)
