St George in the East - names on war memorial
« on: Wednesday 31 May 17 20:17 BST (UK) »
I am researching the 95 names on the WW1 war memorial for St. George in the East.  The memorial is in a poor condition and as such I am struggling to identify/confirm the names below.  If anyone has information on these names I would like to hear from them.

C. Adams - could the initial be a 'B' ?
H. Askew
C. Bowles (possibly related to John Bowles who is on the memorial)
W. Cobb
C. Dennis (possibly related to J.Dennis who is on memorial)
J. Dennis
A. Gardner
A.E. Gates

Wright (West Ham, Stratford, Cripplegate)
Widenstrom (Chicago and Minnesota)
Swain (Cripplegate, St Lukes)
Wolfe (St Giles in the Fields)
Willis (Gt. Leighs; Brentford)

hello Alison

you may already be aware that by using google stgeorgeintheeastwarmemorial indicates that a list of names is available.

for my own similar research in my locality I visited war graves in the local cemetery, checked the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website and checked the 1901 & 1911 census returns. you could also check out the local British Legion for assistance.

Apologies, I should have mentioned that I have checked 1901 & 1911 censuses and CWG and Soldiers Died.  I got my list of names from the St. George in the East church website which has an quite a lot of information relating to the area.  I have also been in touch with the owner of the site who said they tried a few years back to identify all the names but were unsuccessful.  I am hoping someone might recognise one of these names and confirm the full name.  I hope at some point to create a website with all the details I have found.  Many thanks again for your help
