Delia McDermott
« on: Wednesday 31 May 17 20:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone would be able to help.

My mother grew up in a convent and never met her mother.

She was baptised in the Cathedral of the Assumption, Tuam, Co. Galway in 16th October 1959 by Rev. Martin Geraghty.

Her mother's name was (or is) Delia and the witness to the baptism was Bina Rabbitte.
There was no father listed on the baptism cert and Delia's occupation was listed as cleaner.
According to the cert my mother was born "Dublin Rd, Tuam Galway"

The only clue I have about my Grandmother and my mother's history is that Bina Rabbitte was the person who signed all the birth and death certificates of the babies born in the mother and babies home, which has had all the recent scandals.

If anyone has any information, I would really appreciate it.

My mother has wondered her whole life about where she came from and if she has any family.

Ideally she would like to at least see a picture of her mother Delia.

Thanks in advance

James

Hi James

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

Ah my apologies,

That's a shame. I very much doubt that my grandmother is alive, however without being able to use names then I dont see any way I am going to find any information.

Thanks for letting me know.

I will remove myself from the site.

Thanks again
McDermott

Hi James

Don't go just yet, there may be chatters here with more specialist knowledge of the area and resources (both online and in the real world) who can give you general hints and tips for finding more information.

We're open 24/7 365 days of the year, people drop in here as and when they can.

You also have enough posts now for people to send to information about living people if they have it.

Welcome to rootschat

As dawnsh said people here can help and can also use the private message system (after three posts) if sharing private information

Just to say you are probably aware that McDERMOTT is a common surname and may prove difficult to trace someone of the name without additional information

A person called Delia as a given name was usually named Brigid

Hi James

Rootschat allows 24hours for corrections to typos etc but as that has passed I'll remove some information for you.

Seems that Bina Rabbitte passed away recently, quite a lot of entries if you google her name.

If you could edit my post that would be great.

Yeah I found a fair bit of information on Bina, which is what led me to look into the Tuam mother and baby home.

Thanks again for all the info & help.

I am going to contact TUSLA to see if they have any info

James,

My mother was in the home in Tuam and knew only her mother's name.  We had some success discovering what happened to her mother.  If you are interested in any details or advice, let me know.
