Who do you think you are magazine
« on: Thursday 01 June 17 18:33 BST (UK) »
I have subscribed to the magazine 'Who do you think you are', for several years. Got a letter today saying the yearly subscription was increasing from just under £40 to £54.60, a £15 increase. In the July issue which i received yesterday new subscribers can sign up for a yearly subscription price of £40.95, I really enjoy reading this mag but am seriously thinking of cancelling because this does not seem fair.
Any thoughts on this?

Why don't you contact them and ask the question  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

I think they are hoping to get 'new' subscribers prior to the increase (whenever that takes place) and will only apply when your sub runs out (whenever that is) surely?

I agree with BumbleB, contact them and ask why. If they don't offer you a reduction, tell them that you are cancelling your subscription. Then after a few months take out another subscription at the new price, either in your name or in someone else's name. It happens all the time with insurance, television, broadband etc, reduced prices are offered to new subscribers. A friend who worked for a very well known insurance company told me to always change every year in order to get the best deals!

Does your local studies/archives subscribe?

I read it at Westminster Archives and TNA, Kew.

But yes, contact them and complain about the price hike.

If nobody complains then they may not know there's a problem.

Or get someone to buy you a gift subscription for a year at the lower price.

The same happened to me in Feb, I had a continuing 6 monthly sub at £19.45. They sent me a letter stating it would go up to £31.50! I rang them and they offered me £20.45 as a new subscriber. I would certainly give them a ring Carol, the person I spoke to was quite pleasant.

Check with your local library first.

I've been downloading it (and several others), free and for n'owt, to my iPad for months using a free app called "Zinio" through a library susbscription. Your local library may well offer the same facility.
