How did Thomas William COHEN get to Australia before 1844?
« on: Friday 02 June 17 03:05 BST (UK) »
Thomas William COHEN was born Manchester England c1814, parents Matthew & Ann, and married Elizabeth NASH at the Church of England, St Phillips, Sydney, Australia on the 9 Oct 1844.
How he got to Australia is proving to be hard to track down, tried Convict records without success and was wondering if he could have been with the army, and if so where would I find those records or any other records that may help.
Have managed to find most of the after marriage records, just how he got to Australia is the puzzle.
Your help appreciated.

Does his death certificate state how long he had been in (presumably?) NSW?

Have you checked for his arrival in other States?

Where are you looking?  He arrived in 1842 on the Champion.  If you don't have access to the documents let me know and I will type it up.

Ruskie & Debra thanks for you replies.
Ruskie, Haven't got his death cert, some of the ones I have got for other family members, the years in NZ were nowhere close to the correct figure, but if all else fails will get it.
Debra, A'try, Family search, Oz ships & NSW Archives.  Found the "Champion" entry for a Thomas COWEN, with parents Matthew & Ann and have tried to check back on 1841 English census to tie it to COHEN. On the passenger list from Archives 2 other young men from Lancashire & also blacksmiths are on the voyage, John CALDICOTT & John HALL. On the 1841 census of the COWEN family a John Caldicott, occupation, I think, engine builder is with the family so that seems to tie these 2 together. Thomas seems to be a Butcher, but hard for me to read. Cohen & Cowen sound very similar. So if this is the same record you found, will add this to the records until proven otherwise.
Cheers

Hi Heather.
Have you read carefully all the text on the record?

Amongst the information there is a "character reference" from one Mary EDIT ( I now think it is Nancy, not Mary?) GOULDESBROUGH.(sic)

Had you noted that a son of your Thomas, named Clement George COHEN, gave his son the name Victor Goldsborough.
It is mentioned here in his death notice.

This strikes me as more than coincidence. ;D

Sue

PS Adding. John CALDICOT had as one of his referees the same woman GOULDESBOROUGH {of Hulme which is in Manchester I think)

On the 1841 census of the COWEN family.........   Cohen & Cowen sound very similar. .......
Cheers

On the submitted 1814 Christening record for the Thomas you are looking for, the spelling is COWEN.

Thank you all for your time and help,
Sue, One of Thomas & Elizabeth's sons c1856 was named Henry Goldsborough, (would he be the Harry in the death notice?) wondered where that had come from, also one c1848, named Mark Last, maybe the Last will come to light somewhere.
Jamjar, thought it read "Butcher" on the 1841 as Cowen, but maybe to get to Australia, a specific trade was needed.
Thank you for all the information, will do a search for the Gouldesbrough/Goldsborough connection tomorrow and try to work out how it all fits together.

Henry/Harry was Henry Goldsborough Cohen. I can't see his death on NSWBDM.
