What happened to Mary PLUMMER?
« on: Friday 02 June 17 10:02 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor that seems to have vanished into thin air.

Mary PLUMMER, born 28/9/1894 (NZBDM 1894/12666). Daughter of Edwin Charles and Elizabeth Ann PLUMMER.

Can't find a marriage or a death.

I did find a Mary PLUMMER on FamilySearch in 1902 working on the SS Tongariro outbound to England, but surely they didnt let 8 yr olds do that?!

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hello...

There are In Memoriam notices from Mary and Ernest Stephen (Joe) BESTON and from Ruby and Oswald ELLIS...

Papers Past: Page 1 - 10 Oct 1923 - NZ Herald

Ernest Stephen (Joe) BETSON died in 1946 and is buried in Tauranga Anglican cemetery.

Tauranga council cemetery database

There is a Mary BESTON marriage sometime after Ernest Stephen (Joe) BESTON died. Possibly a re-marriage or possibly just a namesake.

I can't mention the year of the possible re-marriage as it's post-1937 but it occured before this following chap died in 1963...

1963/28817 - JONES, Herbert Van Walling - 78Y

Herbert is buried at Waikumete.

Regards
Beg

Hi

It seems that the Waikumete Cemetery record for the above-named Herbert Van Walling JONES, probably relates to his having been cremated there ?

There is a further Cemetery record > this time for St. Andrews (Anglican) Church, Epsom, Auckland > which lists the following :

#  437 - JONES - Mary - 28/9/1896 * -- 22/7/73 - @ 76

#   438 - JONES - Herbert - 19/12/1963 @ 78

[* noting that cemetery record has birth year as 1896. ]

This is very possibly the Probate record for your Mary (the place of death and year given, matches) ?

https://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=13094361

Unfortunately the NZ Probate files available for viewing online at the FamilySearch website, do not yet extend beyond the year 1961.

.... oops ... "the NZ Probate files (ex Auckland Office) available for viewing ...do not yet extend beyond the year 1961.

Sorry, I had meant to add that the year 1961 applied to the Probate files ex Archives New Zealand Office at Auckland.

This record for Herbert v. W. JONES - 1964, also at Auckland.

You guys are the best!

Here I am wrangling for a fortnight, and you solve it in a matter of hours.
I think I had got to the stage where I couldn't see the woods for the trees.

With regards to Mary's birth year, I should go with 1894, it's more likely as the BDM birth record should take precedence over the others?

Death records are only as good as the informant and often they get muddled due to the grief they are feeling,
