LAWRENCE Family of Yeoman Farmers from Wiltshire
« on: Friday 02 June 17 19:12 BST (UK) »
Here is a Wiltshire family of yeoman farmers in Wiltshire, Berkshire and Hampshire, all cousins of mine.  I would appreciate assistance in tracing their descendants.

Charles Tucker Lawrence, son of Richard Lawrence, yeoman, and of Sarah Tucker, was baptized in Lyneham, Wiltshire, England, on May 14th., 1804.  Charles farmed in Preston, in the parish of Lyneham, Wilts, where he was a yeoman.  On February 10th., 1842, in Draycot Cerne, in Chippenham district, Charles married Elizabeth Knight.  Elizabeth had been born in Langley Burrell, Wilts, about 1819.  About the mid-1840s they moved to farm in Betterton Farm East, in the parish of Ardington, Berks;  they took over that farm from Charles’ second cousin, Richard Lawrence.  By 1861 and 1871, they were farming in Hayes Farm in Tangley, Hants;  by the 1881 census, they were retired farmers in Langley Burrell, Wilts, with children Richard 36 and Cecilia 31 living with them.  Charles 84 died in the Chippenham district, about Q3 of 1889.  Elizabeth, widow, was living in Langley Burrell, with Richard and Cecilia, both single, at the censuses of 1891 and 1901.  Charles and Elizabeth had issue:
[A]   Sarah Mary Ann Lawrence, born about Q1 of 1843, in Lyneham, Wilts;  birth registered in Cricklade district in that quarter;  last noted with her parents in Tangley at the 1861 census;
   Charles Knight Lawrence, born in Preston, baptized in Lyneham on May 5th., 1844;  last noted with his parents in Betterton at the 1851 census;
[C]   Richard Thomas Lawrence, born in Preston, baptized in Lyneham on October 14th., 1845;  Richard 55, unmarried, was enumerated in Langley Burrell, at the 1901 census, living with his mother;
[D]   Elizabeth Tucker Lawrence, born in Preston, baptized in Lyneham on April 4th., 1847;   did she die young?  an Elizabeth Lawrence’s death was recorded in Cricklade, Wilts, in Q3 of 1849.
[E]   Cecilia Jane Lawrence, born in Betterton, Berks;  Celia Jane Lawrence baptized in Ardington, Berks, on April 29th., 1849.  Cecilia 52, unmarried, was enumerated in Langley Burrell, at the 1901 census, living with her mother;
[F]   George James Lawrence, born in Betterton, Berks, birth registered in Wantage, Berks in Q1 of 1851.  George was with his parents in Tangley at the 1861 census.  At the 1891 census, George James 40 was head of household, in Brixton, Lambeth, London.  George J. 50 was there again, at the 1901 census.

I would be delighted to share LAWRENCE family history notes with any descendant or researcher of this family, all cousins of mine.

Best wishes.

This could be worth considering -

1871 -

Sarah Ann Compton   Mar 28 b. Wiltshire. Bailiff wife
Edmund Tom Compton   6 b. Shipton, Hampshire
Harriet Compton   4 b. Shipton, Hampshire
Amy Mary Compton   2 b. Shipton, Hampshire

RG10 Piece 1241 Folio 112 Page 5, Kimpton, Hampshire

On GRO website Edmund Tom Compton's birth is recorded with mother's maiden name of Lawrence.

Have you tried to find anyone researching this family by looking in Surname Interests in Your Tools, below?

As you are looking for descendants of 5 (or 6) people born more than 160 years ago, there could be hundreds of people involved, so it is up to you to try and make connections.

Have you managed to make any useful connections with people on GenesReunited?

Elizabeth's death:
Elizabeth Lawrence age 83 living at Langley Cottage buried on 21st April 1902 in Langley Burrell

Look for probate/will information and apply for will  (George James Lawrence and Richard Thomas Lawrence in charge of probate, others named on will?)

Death for Richard:
Richard T Lawrence age 83 at death in June quarter 1929 in Chippenham Wiltshire

As he left almost £4000, worth investigating his will (probate to George James Lawrence retired baker and a solicitor)

Death of George J Lawrence age 79 in March quarter 1930 in Chippenham.

Probate etc to George William Lawrence, grocer and same solicitor as his brother.

As all the above information was easily found on Ancestry and the UK Probate service, how much of it have you already got and followed up for more information available from the wills?

Added:
Cecilia Jane died in 1939, probate to solicitor - will for information about nieces/nephews/great nieces and nephews?  Try and find her in 1939 to see who she was living with? (Eleanor J Dyke, 1882, and 10 other people, so might be a nursing home, or a very large farming family.  I do not have access to 1939, others do.)
