Harras Moor House
« on: Friday 02 June 17 21:53 BST (UK) »
An ancestor's 1810 Baptism Record states the father's place of abode is “Harras Moor House.”  I’m having no luck finding out what it was or where exactly on Harras Moor it was.  Can anyone advise me please?  Grateful for any help.
Many thanks

Hi Geoff-E
Thank you for such a speedy reply – and the very clever map!  You know exactly where to put your finger on everything – I don’t know how you do it but I am very grateful that you do.
It seems you may be right about the house location but are you able to help me interpret the property ?   It looks a decent size of building and it seems to have a little land round it – do you think that might be so?  They weren’t rich people – he’s classed as a “waggoner” on the baptism record so I wouldn’t really expect them to have a largish house/property.
Many thanks for your help

In 1901 and 1911 censuses it was occupied by David TELFORD and his wife.  He was a Gamekeeeper for some estate or other, so it was probably a tied cottage.

1911 census says the house had 5 rooms, in addition to kitchen, lobby etc.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Many, many thanks for this Geoff (I can search the censuses by persons names but I have yet to master the art of searching them by place.)
It seems then to  have been a reasonably sized house so maybe they weren’t as poor as I thought.  I don’t know if a “waggoner” would be entitled to a tied cottage but it is certainly something I can do further research on.  Thank you for opening  up this further avenue for me.
