Betty Evans
« on: Friday 02 June 17 23:27 BST (UK) »
Hi :)

I saw a post about the Evans family from East Hendred, Berkshire now Oxfordshire and on the persons surname List was the Surname Evans under the category Gypsy and that's why I want to find out if my Evans from East Hendred were also of Romany heritage.  I've tried to get in contact with the user but I got no answer.

His ancestor is a William Evans who was baptised in East Hendred  Jan 1 1809 , son of John &Sarah.

My ancestor is Elizabeth ,,Betty" Evans baptised December 14 1754 in East Hendred, daughter of John Evans and Jane .

Her siblings are :

Mary , baptised December 13 1747
John ,baptised December 31 1749
Benjamin, baptised September 12 1757
Jane, baptised August 9 1761

Elizabeth ,,Betty" Evans married on the 16th November 1778 in East Hendred John Goddard. I have no Information about him.

I hope you can help me  ???

Best regards

Jane

I would be suspicious that you are correct thinking they may be of gypsy decent.
This book "HERCULES AND PETER STANLEY"The Family Trees of Hercules and Peter Stanley: from about 1710 to about 1910, from primarily Hampshire and Berkshire. By Anne-Marie Ford. Contains the surnames of Evans and Goddard. http://rtfhs.org.uk/publications/gypsy-families/ Sadly the book is out of print, maybe someone can look inside it for you?

The baptisms are trancribed, parents John & Jane Evans with nothing to suggest they are "gypsys"

Hello whiteout7 and Kimbrey,

Thanks for your help  ;)  i was very surprised when i saw the Post of the user and want to figure out if it's true or not.

Can someone find the marriage of John Evans and Jane in East Hendred or somewhere else? I think they married between 1730-1754 .

I have also another question, is the occupation ,,shoebinder" a Romany occupation? Because the Sister of my 5x Great grandmother Letitia Goddard , was Jemima Goddard and a Shoebinder .

Regards

Jane

I cannot see a marriage for John and Jane at East or West Hendred - they do not seem to be there before 1747

Have you come across this one?

Joseph GILES married Anne EVANS, daughter of John and Sarah EVANS,
on 2 July 1825, at East Hendred, Berkshire, England

Perhaps another person you could try and contact?

"I've found the Sister of Letitia Goddard my GGGG grandmother, Jemima Goddard a Shoebinder. Both of them are the daughters of William Goddard from West Ilsley and Mary Hitchman from Wantage"

I've seen census records showing gypsy families having shoebinders but this alone does not mean Jemima Goddard was a gypsy.

In the Berkshire Parish Registers it lists William Goddard and Mary Hitchman as both being from Grove p.w 1 Jan 1821
(Mary HITCHMAN & William GODDARD   Marriage   1 Jan 1821   Berkshire   Wantage : St Peter and St Paul : Phillimore's Transcripts   Row 5 - free reg)

Have you noticed the John Butler sojourner that married an Ellen Goddard both of Grove in the Berkshire Parish Registers? 17 Nov 1789. (NOTE GROOMS OCCUPATION IS SOJOURNER - working visitor or gypsy do you think??)
(Ellen GODDARD & John BUTLER   Marriage   17 Nov 1789   Berkshire   Wantage : St Peter and St Paul : Phillimore's Transcripts   Row 104-  free reg)

Another: Couple from Grove
Elizabeth GODDARD & William WOODLEY   Marriage   11 May 1785   Berkshire   Wantage : St Peter and St Paul : Phillimore's Transcripts   Row 63 - free reg

Another Couple from Grove
Elizabeth HOBBIS & William GODDARD   Marriage   19 May 1788   Berkshire   Wantage : St Peter and St Paul : Phillimore's Transcripts   Row 70 -free Reg

cf to Betty Evans marrying John Goddard in 1778 at East Hendred, Berkshire

Only about 10 years apart are Ellen, Elizabeth, William and John Goddards marriages. Are they siblings perhaps?

Perhaps you could study all the Goddard couples from Grove?

Hello ,

I've found 8 baptism records for the children of John Goddard and Elizabeth ,,Betty" Evans in East Hendred.

Letty 22.11.1775
Betty  30.12.1781
Joseph 19.2.1786
Jenny 7.4.1788
Richard 11.5.1789
William 7.5.1792
James 16.2.1793
Stephen  5.4.1796

I have also found the marriages of Ellen  Goddard , Elizabeth and William but no birth or baptism records.

I think my John Goddard was the one who was baptised 9. August 1747 in East Hendred who was the son of Richard and Elizabeth but i'm not really sure if he is the right one . And i can't find a marriage for a Richard Goddard and Elizabeth.

I want to know why the user thinks that his ancestors (the Evans family) were Gypsies. Were my ancestors from the same area also ,,Gypsies " and the Goddards of Wantage and Grove too?

Thanks for your help whiteout7  ;)

Regards

Jane
