Hunter - Kallan Tyrone
« on: Saturday 03 June 17 06:19 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

My GG Grandmother Jane HUNTER and (I think) her sister Margaret came to Australia on the first voyage of the Sirocco into Sydney Australia in Jan 1864.

Have been searching for her Father David (on her death Certificate) coming from Tyrone - just found the immigration record - it states they came from Kallan - Tyrone.  If someone could help me with Townland, Barony or whatever you can where this might be.  I would really appreciate it.  Have looked at various Parish etc maps, and the closest I could find was the townland Killeen in the Ardstraw Parish, do you think this would be the place - or can someone help with something further.

Actually - another question her religion is listed as C S - there are numerous RC (Roman Catholic) and C E ( I am assuming Church of England or Eire) - any suggestions. ??? ???

Many thanks in advance.

Jenny

There are several townland that begin with Killen/Killeen as well as Call in Tyrone.

C.S. as a religion doesn't seem right so I'm wondering if you are looking at a transcription or original record? Could it be E.C. (Established Church, i.e. Church of Ireland or State church)?

Griffith's Valuation (mid 1800s) will list those who held land and there are 6 David Hunter entries in Tyrone. None of the places are remotely close to 'Kallan.'

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Many thanks for your responses -

I shall attach the shipping record - the Hunter girls are towards the bottom - not sure of the Religion either.

Feel it may well be one of the David Hunters in the Parish of Ardstraw -
found a Killeen on one of the Maps I have been searching and it is near Newtownstewart - shall
have to have a look at Find my Past on my next visit to the library and check them out more fully.

Many thanks for your help.

Jenny

Wonder if the religion wasn't C.I. (Church of Ireland) rather than C.S.

I don't think the place is Kallan (or anything else beginning with K- the lower loop from the y above comes down over first letter)- more like Callan (or even Gallan suggested earlier) although I can't say for sure.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
