Some background on Edward's father.......

Edward's father may have been a lay preacher in the Methodist church. There are many references to "H. J. Berry" in Papers Past in the Taranaki region. [Also snippets about his activities as a farmer.]

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/HNS19111116.2.42?query=h.%20j.%20berry

His death:

1972/29135   Berry   Henry John   7 September 1873

[In view of his great age, it is possible that an obituary was published in the local newspaper(s)]

Probated will [1972].....

Thankyou -  They lost their first son Henry on May 26th 1907 (HNS)  and then adopted Edward -they don't seem to have any other children. I found that Henry John was a farmer, but wondered if  the preacher was another one -thanks for confirming this.

Thankyou -I wonder if I am correct in thinking that he was interred in a family plot, with Henry ? I don't follow the   reference to the estate of Henry Berry -perhaps that was how the plot was purchased?

I haven't found anything about Edward except for a ref to  an E .Berry (Hawa must be Hawea)gaining a place in a swimming championship in Napier in 1915. Someone has connected him to me by a DNA test, so I guess further research is needed to find him  - no one in the O'Callaghan clan here has any knowledge of him. Perhaps someone from the
wider Berry Clan may have some idea.

Maria.

Possibly because the digitising in respect of the Hawera newspaper at present only goes as far as 1924, the Taranaki newspapers (2) to 1920. The Patea Mail is the only paper for the region to extend beyond that period.

Thank you very much. I contacted the library and they were very helpful - most of it confirmed what you told me.He was known as Moifa and had  children -one daughter who has had her DNA done so perhaps that could be followed up  at a later date. Possibly mother was Margaret Agnes O'Callaghan from Cork but he wasn't born here as far as we know. Moifa could be a clue, it is unusual.

I also followed up on your tip of contacting Karori  Cemetery re William Dempsey -his remains have been exhumed and re-interred at the head of the plot by license,as no relatives were found to purchase it after some years when the cemetery was getting filled up. It was interesting to learn this.

Regards, Maria.
