1609 customs entry (almost illegible)
« on: Sunday 04 June 17 18:03 BST (UK) »
This entry has almost gone due to the damp. In the Plow[e] of Amsterdam ... the last two words of the entry (on the second line) could be tobacco? pipes but the word proceeding it ought to be the unit of measurement. Can anyone one work out that word? The tail of the "p" from the line above is slightly confusing.

Could you help us get an idea of the overall sense of the document? What do you think the rest of this extract says? It might just help us come up with something.

I'm no expert on this but the photo file info shows (correctly or incorrectly) that the the scan resolution is relatively low (96 dpi). If you're able to make a higher resolution scan (300, 600 or even 1200 dpi) then there are software 'tricks' to make the text more visible./

Attached is a wider clip showing the previous entry too. Very little of it is legible.
"In le Plowe de Amsterdam Jacob S? [master]
Henry Kynn ? ? for vj casks j
? ? English? molasses
In le Plow(e)
Henry (Kynn) m(erchant?) parte ? paire
? ? k?s ? ? ? ?
? ? ij ? ? tobacco? pipes
(end of entry)

Thanks for reposting it. But, as you say, it’s still almost illegible.

For what it’s worth, I think the word before tobacco ends -ed, but I can’t suggest anything specific.

In the previous line, the word starting with k is king(es), then another unknown word, then paire (again).

A poor offering, I’m afraid. After your extended work on this material, I believe you would have a better grasp of this specialist vocabulary than anyone else!

I've found that there is a 1617 will of Henry Kynnersley, merchant tailor of London.

Not sure if this helps much more.  Have increased dpi, tweaked the light levels and converted to grayscale.

Possibly "stockings"?
