Shaw family
« on: Sunday 04 June 17 20:20 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone has, please, any details of a marriage between Peter Shaw born about 1832, Burton Joyce, Notts. and Elizabeth Holloway born about 1833, Birmingham.  I have traced this couple as living in Birmingham at Bishop Street Back in the 1881 census, with children aged from 23 down to 9, but can't find a marriage.  They may, of course, have just lived together but if there was a marriage, I'd like to trace it.

Grateful for any information, thanks.

If you look at the image of 1881 census it reads John Shaw and has been mistranscribed on some sites as Peter Shaw

This looks like the family in 1871

Thanks Suz, that's fascinating!  I had read the microfilm image as Peter, but looking closer, as you say it is John.  Maybe I will be able to find the marriage now.  I am tracing back from their daughter Elizabeth Hannah, born 1871 but after the census of that year.

Very grateful for your prompt reply.

Cheers,

I cannot find them in 1861
I have Elizabeth's mother Charlotte in 1861 at Hope St with daughter Charlotte son Thomas and son William - Elizabeth is not with them

there is a birth reg for Emily Charlotte Holloway Shaw Dec qtr 1859 Birmingham - who I assume is daughter Emily c age 11 in 1871 census

so we can only assume Elizabeth and John were together before 1861

but this is interesting

1861
Back 34 Bishop St Ct 4 Birmingham
John Shaw lodger Unmarried 26 Cordwainer Nottingham
James Phillips Lodger Married 22 Dresser
and next door
Hannah Malley head W 40 Boot Binder Leicester
ELIZA HOLLOWAY Boarder 3 Birmingham
RG9 2142 68 31

so this looks like John unmarried and daughter Eliza boarding next door using name Holloway

so where are Elizabeth and daughter Emily Constance?
