Looking for a needle in a haystack: James Thomson, born 1859
« on: Monday 05 June 17 13:23 BST (UK) »
James Thomson was one of nine children of Alexander Milne Thomson and Jane Ann Cargill. He was born on 19 July 1859 in Brechin, and must have died after 1911, when he is recorded as unmarried, aged 51, with his mother and two unmarried sisters in Arbroath. His occupation is listed as private means, but I have yet to find him in 1881, 1891 or 1901, so he may have been out of the country.

I have looked at every death of suitably aged James Thomsons in Scotland from 1911 without success. I have not so far found a newspaper announcement of his death, or a burial or other clue, or a will.

Only two of his siblings married. All except his youngest brother David, who died in New Jersey, died in Scotland.

Hi Forfarian

There is a possible James Thomson b. 1859 going back and forth in shipping manifests from the US.

An incoming trip shows a James L. Thomson, 65, janitor who gives an Arbroath address of 21 Ann Street. Arrival date of 3 Aug 1924 into Glasgow.

Thanks, Monica. I suspect that the janitor is James Lawrence Thomson, born 1859 in Arbroath. I can't find a death for him with the middle name.

Thank you, ev. I had all the information in the inscription, but not the actual text of it, for which many thanks. That's why I would like to find out what became of James - he is the 'loose end' of the family.
