Carlisle Stickleys
« on: Monday 05 June 17 15:24 BST (UK) »
Hi

While I was in Cumbria my gggrandfather Charles Stickley from Dorset turned up discharged from the army at Carlisle Castle.

Since I've left I've found a marriage with Rootschats help in Carlisle and have church and civil certificaes

Since then I have Mary Stickley aged 18 wife of Charles died Carlisle 1856, also Ellen Stickley aged 12 died Carlisle 1856

Can't find a first marriage to Mary for him.  I'm wondering if this or Ellen were his sister.

I'm wondering if any kind soul would look for either church burial. probably RC or cemetery records? Just in year.

Maryd 16th Jan and Ellen9tyh April.

A big ask but I'm a vit far away now and cant find it on the net.

Best wishes

Emms :)

Ellen may have been born Q3 1843 in Blandford district, mother nee HAWS. (Parents may be Thomas and Mary, married 1840)
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Thank you Goeff

She was in service and most Stickleys are from that area  I know this family but not Charles's.

Thinking whether there is another one  Charles was born Longcritchel near there but there are loads of others there  and many spellings and variations

Best wishes

Hi
Had a look today for you just a quick search.  The Mary that died in Jan1856 is buried in Carlisle cemetery. She lived in John Street, Botchergate, carlisle.  She was buried on 19th Jan.  The entry says she was 18 and was a wife ( but not who her husband was) but I've attached the name part of the entry for you to see as there seems a little confusion about her name.( quality not very good as record was faded.)
Ellen was not buried at Carlisle cemetery (ran out of time to look through all the other church records but will look again)

Wow That's really kind and a real turn up!  It looks as if the certificate was right and she was a wife not sister.. My gggrandfather was known as Charles Stickley or Stickley Ingram (Ingham)  His later wife was buried in one name with her death registered in the other but this looks as if the other name may be her maiden name.  I can't find and English marriage but they used a lot of variations.  I wonder if I'll look in Scotland though.

Thank you for the offer to look elsewhere.  It's a big job thoughg even at this date so don't feel pressurised.  I'm pretty sure Charles second wife it's him and I reckon it is, was RC but possibly not the first and probably not him.

Thank you again.

Best wishes

Initially I thought it was flenery or flannery but I can see Fleming as well. She was buried in unconsecrated ground.  I did have a quick look at one  Catholic church that had burials for that year but there was nothing for Ellen. The main church in town St Mary's didn't have records for that year, must be missing or destroyed! There's really only a couple of other churches for burial in town assuming Ellen was buried here.  I'm assuming that Ellen lived at the same address?

Hi

Thank you very much!

Sorry No

Ellen wasn't at the same address  She was in service in Abbey street so may or may not be related  Shae died of diphtheria aged 11 I think after only four days.

Unconsecrated may have meant non conformist  There are RC but also Presbyterian and Methodist links.  We may be out of luck.  Thank you so much for trying.  I can't believe I found these under a year after leaving Carlisle!!

Thank you again.

PS

Looking again at the other death Charles is down as present at Mary's death aged 18 at 56 John street a labourer at Holme Head Works.  If it's our Charles and I think he must be he was discharged with ill health from Carlisle Castle a few years before having joined up in a Dorset regiment but not having been in service abroad I have his service record and also record in service later in the police in Lancashire.

Best wishes
