1939 just means they weren't in the same place on enumeration day - not necessarily they weren't together

I've put a photo of the grave here from pictures I took some time ago. I've never come across the Bell grave No 327 and it's not listed in the NWKFHS MIs for Brockley & Ladywell, so perhaps it's unmarked, though that list is by no means complete. They only cut down the vegetation at B&L once a year, and by now it'll be shoulder high, so I don't intend to make a special visit to look any time soon.

As to why baby John and Mary Crossland were buried with an apparent stranger, I've read of a touching custom of burying children with an adult so as to be "looked after" and not left all alone, but I don't know when this ceased. I have certainly found duplicated plot numbers at Brockley & Ladywell (not just associated with its being a merger of 3 cemeteries), so that remains another possible explanation, but as the 3 burials in 327 are round the same date, I tend to discount it in this case.
Researching Penge, Anerley, (incuding the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.

Thanks for that Chris ... Good clear shots of the grave!  Also, that's very interesting re the custom you read about children being buried with an adult so they are 'looked after' ... I will look into that further.  Do you know which month of the year the council clears the vegetation?  I rarely get to London these days but if I want to tie a visit to the cemetery in to a future trip, it would be handy to actually be able to see the graves!  Many thanks, Nina

Hi Nina,
Very excited to tell you that the Olive Jone Winifred Constantina Edney is my Great Aunt. My grandfather is Kenelm Oscar Alphonso Edney. My father is Eric Edney.
I was born in New Zealand where I am still living.
I have information on Olive J. that I can share with you. Although I have only been able to go so far. I can't find any information on my Grandfather Kenelm. I have searched high and low for a death certificate and have had no luck so far.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Cheers Kathy (Kathleen ) Edney

In case you don’t have it already Kenelm Edney, an engineer born 1878, sailed for New Zealand on the 30th May 1906, with his wife on board the Corinthic. They were heading for Auckland.

Ladyhawke. Thank you so much for this information much of which I don't have. Can now add to my ancestry tree and fill in some blanks.
No further information on Kenelm. I will just keep digging and hope for the best.

Hello Kathy! Nina here! Sorry for delay in getting back to you, I was away. I will send you a PM outlining my relationship to Olive, and would love to hear what you can tell me! Nina
