WHITELEY FREDRIC ERNEST
« on: Monday 05 June 17 17:54 BST (UK) »
Hi

Hope someone may be able to help.  I'm looking for army records of above chap.

He was born in APRIL 1880 • Stockton, Durham, England

We know he joined the army here (not sure of dates, no records found)

He married Louisa Forster Ratt in Gloucester in 1903

They both died in New Zealand, she in 1925 and him 1945.

I also found details of medals he was award in New Zealand.  What I cant find is when he got there, his enrolment in the army. I do have world wide searches but they don't seem to give much away.

Could anyone help.

Many thanks
Sue

www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz
 - their death records here are under spelling "Whiteley".
Also the possible births of three children, Edward Clayton 1905 (died aged 3 months), Ruth May 1908,    Jessie Louisa 1912.

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ODT19180821.2.57?query=%22Frederic%20Ernest%22
 - he was in a list of men called up in August 1918 as C-class reservists (men with two children) but I can't find records of him at https://archway.archives.govt.nz/
Which medals was he awarded according to your records?

Hello Sue

Just adding firstly this photo of the headstone for Frederic Ernest WHITELY.

I also haven't found (yet) anything to suggest he served in the New Zealand forces (WW1) and quite usually, a person might have some acknowledgement of his service noted on a headstone (or plaque).

I will look further for you.

Sue ... this looks to be the arrival in New Zealand of Frederic and his wife.

The NZ Army WW1 Reserve Roll (info as given by jorose) does appear to have been the only mention for Frederic (or Frederick) Ernest WHITELEY or  WHITELY in New Zealand records.

[PS  If your source of NZ Army records was the FindMyPast (FindMyPast) website, then I see that they, perhaps misleadingly, have him indexed under "New Zealand WW1 Soldiers" ;  they haven't made the distinction that his name appears only on a list of WW1 Reservists. ]   ;)

Wow this is fantastic.

First of all my spelling mistake on his surname sorry.

That's his wife's whole family with them.

On joining the army he was an accountant.

First name(s)   Frederic Ernest
Last name   Whiteley
Last address   Geraldine
Occupation   Accountant
Classification   C
Country   New Zealand
Record set   New Zealand Ww1 Soldiers
Category   Military, armed forces & conflict
Subcategory   First World War
Collections from   Australasia

I'm hoping somewhere on your records you have his place of birth so I can be sure it's the right person.

Once again many thanks.

Suexx

Hello Sue

As I explained in my previous post, although the Military records for New Zealand (those which appear on the pay sites FindMyPast and presumably ancestry.com also ?) show the
>   "Record Set :  New Zealand Ww1 Soldiers"
and the records amongst that set for Frederic Ernest WHITELEY, show only that he was named as a New Zealand Army Reservist .

Had he actually seen service with the New Zealand Army, then there would be a file or at least some evidence of this on a roll or similar.   Assuming that is that he served under his rightful name and not an alias.
