Hi lu

Yes the back of the photo gives his name and details.

Having found his birth and early censuses it led me on to marriage to Louisa. He then disappeared from England.

I then picked the family up in New Zealand including the little girl adopted.

The photo suggest in may have return to enrol in ww1.....before returning to New Zealand.

I may be totally off track......that's why I'm trying to establish facts.

I really appreciate the time you have put into this..........I hope I'm right.

Hi Lu

Nothing that isn't on here.

I found his marriage to Louisa.......and then the family disappeared.

General search through World Wide Findmypast brought them up in New Zealand.

There is a picture with his name on the back.  The uniform is Durham Light Infantry, but no records exist of his movement.  The cap badge is only relevant to a certain time after 1902 but before 1920's

All details fit your Fredric Ernest Whiteley .............just the mystery of an old photo.

Hello Sue

Have just spotted your incoming message.   In the meantime I've found something else which could be of interest.

Yes the back of the photo gives his name and details.

Okay ... can you add those details here please ?

Hi Sue

Well, having looked over a lot of records concerning the Frederic Ernest WHITELEY who arrived in New Zealand in 1903 with his wife (and members of her family), I really cannot find any evidence - nor any good reason - why this particular man would return to England to serve his country of birth in WW1.
[If as you say he was born circa 1880, then at the outset of war he was almost aged in his mid-30's and was leaving behind a wife and young family. ]

As previously stated, judging by records available in New Zealand, this man was only ever named as a Reservist in the NZ Army WW1 ... and that was (late in the war) in August 1918.

See the reference in my following post to another F. WHITELEY ... who mets at least one of "details" you've mentioned is on the photo.

Hi Sue

As you appear to have access to FindMyPast, then please look over the military record for a "Fred WHITELEY" by using the following search criteria.

FindMyPast

>  Military Records

First Name :   > enter "Fred"
Last Name :   >  enter "WHITELEY"
Where :  World > enter "England"

Then scroll down to ...

> Regiment :    and > enter  "Durham Light Infantry"

That's all you need to enter.

------

The record which is returned is for a Fred WHITELEY - born c. 1890 who served at one time (maybe briefly) in the Durham Regiment.   There is a "Short Service" Attestation form dated December 1915.    You will need to scroll through the record for other information - some of which is faded and difficult to decipher.
This man appears to have married an Alice TAYLOR.
Possible marriage record (at Free BMD) = Marriages - Jun - 1915 / Fred WHITELEY - AliceTAYLOR - registered at Huddersfield, West Riding, Yorkshire.   A daughter Irene, born 24/2/1918 at Meltham, is also mentioned in record.

Let me know how you get on.

Hi Lu

Your right it doesn't make sense.

This is the Fredric Ernest Whiteley I've been following

Frederic Ernest Whiteley
Registration Year:   1880
Registration Quarter:   Apr-May-Jun
Registration district:   Stockton
Parishes for this Registration District:   View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District
Inferred County:   Durham
Volume:   10a
Page:   59

I've done this because he is the only one near to the address of the photographer.

Have search findmypast and there are a few Fred Whiteley but none born near enough to Durham.

I think I am going to admit defeat here.

Thank you all for the time you've put in to helping me. I will continue looking nearer to home.

With love and good wishes

Sue xx
