Repair and dating of J Deakin photo
« on: Tuesday 06 June 17 13:55 BST (UK) »
This damaged photo of John Deakin (1858-1921), a North Staffordshire collier, must have been taken when he was in his early or mid-forties.  I've been told that two portrait photos were taken, this and one of his wife.  She was Hannah Porter (1858-1905), and so the assumption is that John was 47 at the most (his wife's age at death).  Does that look right to people?  I've never seen the portrait of Hannah; it has disappeared, but is probably in some very distant cousin's photo collection.

I would also be most grateful if anyone could do restoration work on the photo.

Thanks Caz - that's sorted the torn and creased bits very well.  Very much appreciated.  He now looks even more like a US lawman (without a star)!

I don't wish to be rude but he looks a lot older than 47 , more like in his 60's to me.  :-\ Maybe he didn't wear well  ;D

Many thanks for the contributions everyone.  I think Pablo's work on the jacket is suberb, and Handypandy's creation is great - as ever!

Regarding a-l, I know what you mean.  Was this a result of 35 years working in the mines?  Or am I being led astray by the story that this was a twin to a portrait of his wife, and who died in 1905?  I'd love someone to come up with the Hannah (Porter) Deakin photo to allow some comparison.  John died in 1921, four days before his 63rd birthday.

I would suggest this was taken close to his death. his jacket style, wide lapels & long neck (probably 2 button) is a post WW1-1920's style.
Certainly not 1905.
