Angus ploughman's art - or just a bonny picture?
« on: Tuesday 06 June 17 18:12 BST (UK) »
This picture hung above my Grandmother's mantlepiece in Montrose for as long as I can remember. All I know is that it was framed in Brechin in the 1930s - it was supposedly painted by a grieve she was seeing at the time ::) ? Has anyone seen anything like this before? The background is naive in the extreme but the details on the horses is pretty precise. When my father died the picture came to me. I'm not sure if it's not some sort of aide memoire for dressing the horses or just a picture of two horses. I think it's a bonny picture my hubby thinks it's a piece of old tat!

It's not an aide memoire - once you've harnessed up a horse several times you wouldn't need a picture to tell you what to do. Nor is it great art (I hesitate to use the term "old tat"), but it was done by someone who knew his belly band from his breeching and it has sentimental, family history value. Don't let your husband get rid!

The background reminds me of railway posters of the 20's and 30's.

Two horses that someone was rather proud of ?

Most definitely ploughman's art! It may be naive in parts but it's a beautiful thing. I hope you treasure it.  A

I have seen similar pictures by an Aberdeenshire ploughman, William Robbie.
Click on this link to see one of his pictures.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond. I'd never come across William Robbie's work but can see how this is in that style.
